Too big to ride one. One of my customers is making the parts for it, so I’ve seen several. Those who were with me who have ridden them, have said, they’re cool. Myself, i’d rather have a walk, but I think the postal service will be aided a lot by them.

Oh gosh, I was surrounded by Segways at FIRST Robotics competition. I didn’t get a chance to ride one (though I reeeeally wanted to), but quite a few of my friends did… they said it’s amazing. I’ll ride one next year for sure, they’ll be a lot more available to us then. If nothing else, I’ll jump Dean Kamen and steal his.
Amusing tidbit-- one guy on my team almost got run over at competition when Jeb Bush rode around on a Segway.
I thought that the postal service was going to be a natural for the Segway - maybe the ONLY natural market for the Segway. But the early trials are mixed - it turns out that it doesn’t speed up mail delivery at all, because postal carriers sort mail while they walk, which they can’t do while riding on the Segway. So basically they have to lug this thing out to where their route is, pay for it, get it charged, etc., and in the end all it does is lets them motor quickly to each house, where they have to stop and sort mail anyway.
The devil is always in the details.
My local postie uses a little 50cc motor scooter, so he can’t sort mail while travelling, so does it at each stop (or before he leaves in the morning). But I think the scooter would be faster than the segway. And is also allowed on the road, which is undoubtedly handy.
Thanks for replies
bump… any Segway riders reading?
[lame excuse for another bump]
I saw my first Segway in action this weekend in Santa Monica, CA. It was being riden (or rather stood upon – it was not moving) by what looked like a parking cop. So they are slowly making their way out into the street.
