In the 2013 movie The Croods Alan Silvestri was the composer and here in the credits is a bit that was also used in a travel montage in the movie. I am wondering what sort of drum was used for the incessant beat. There’s no resonance so toms or tympani would be ruled out. Muffled snare, perhaps? I’m not enough of a drum expert to know.
Could be a snare played with “broomsticks” (a bit like brushes, but made of wood
like a witches broom) :-
I’d say it’s definitely a snare drum.
Maybe but the initial impact in Silvestri’s composition sounds sharper that Shirai(?) but not as sharp as a drumstick. It could be a matter of how closely the mic was placed, I suppose.
By the way, a witches’ broom is properly called a besom, a piece of ancient trivia I rarely get to show off with.
I would say that is what is being used. They are also referred to as “rods” or “bundled sticks”. There is a small chance you could be hearing brushes played hard, but it seems like there is more attack than there would be with brushes.
