Have you ever been overseas? Did you make contingency plans to swim there, in case your flight got canceled? If not, why not?
A side note to the main topic but are you saying that you feel the evidence that Paul McCartney died in 1966 has some validity?
I still want to know what The Shining has to do with any of this.
Ooh I get it, this is the post where the genius poster from the original board in 1991 pre-internet puts the rube in his place. Your entire worthless post is just bombast, thinly veiled insults and conjecture based on nothing, and contributes nothing, other that titters of laughter among your cronies.
Lot of sound and fury signifying zero-cite that ‘tens of thousands’ of people would be able to spot a fake in a video in 1969 of an event that had never happened before?
Why would a two minute film of a landing be ‘impossible’ please tell? Have you seen 2001? You seem to have a lot of a knowledge about what people you don’t know would do or not do.
No, I meant that there were so many ‘clues’, the clues could not have all been accidental, and I am pretty sure someone later confirmed once the rumor started, some more ‘clues’ were added in on purpose. The same shitty granny songs pre-1966remanined, so definitely the same guy.
Great, Rupert Pupkin I presume? What a stupid f%$*#g analogy. Not sure your age, but getting to the moon first was a VERY big deal back then. There WAS reason to want to be first.
The video itself would not be impossible.
But, as mentioned above, the Soviets (and the rest of the world) were tracking the entire mission. They would certainly have raised some questions if they missed something like a rocket heading to the moon and a capsule descending to the lunar surface and all the radio traffic from the same. They had all the motivation in the world to point and laugh at the failure of the US.
Unless the Soviets (and scientists from around the world) were ALSO in on the conspiracy. But a worldwide conspiracy theory of that scope and power is such that it no longer needs to fake any evidence or convince people at all.
This is just embarrassing. Your own “logic” works against you. How would the movie makers know how to fake the look of walking on the moon before men got there? Nobody had ever seen that locomotion before. If they had gotten it wrong, then what would happen when the successful mission took place? The differences would be obvious. Not to mention that the moon footage is far more than two-minutes and includes all manner of detail about the short horizons, the way dust settled in the low gravity, and much more that also nobody could have known about ahead of time. Kubrick would have gotten every single detail wrong and be exposed on the first real moon mission. Contemplating such idiocy is literally laughable.
Yes, all the “clues” were accidental. All of them. People are geared to put together dots into a pattern, whether or not those dots are truly connected or not. That’s why gullible people get conned so easily. Where there’s smoke, there may only be a smoke machine.
Thank you, for a sound, reasoned response to the actual question asked!
So was launching the first satellite. So was the first man launched into space. So was the first space walk. We were second in all of those and never attempted to fake it. Why would we wait until the moon landing to fake something? And especially something that would be easily disproved by the Russians, other scientists, or the US press who were very familiar with all the astronauts in the programs?
It’s possible to want to be first and also not consider faking it.
You’re welcome, but this point was already made above and either ignored or rejected.
No worries. I’m surprised this doesn’t get me all hyped up, it’s hard enough to live with all the normal idiocy in the world, this one is doubling down on the stupid.
Silly Dopers, The Shining is chock full of clues Kubrick stuck in there to hint at his grand deception.
*"Room 237: In King’s novel, the haunted room is numbered 217. In the movie, it’s 237. Why? “Because the average distance from the Earth to the Moon is 237,000 miles.” It’s actually 238,857 miles, but close enough, right? Weidner proposes that the haunted room represents the filming of the faked moon landing itself. “It’s just like pictures in a book, Danny. It isn’t real.”
You probably remember the creepy twins from the film, the slain children of the previous Overlook caretaker. In King’s novel, however, there was only one slain child. Weidner insists that Kubrick’s alteration is a nod to NASA’s previous Gemini (Get it? twins!) program. Given the genuinely creepy nature of this scene, you might not have noticed that Danny is in fact wearing an “Apollo 11” sweater."*
Another thing: can any of you “skeptics” prove that the C.I.A. and F.B.I. didn’t have contingency plans to assassinate J.F.K. in case a lone gunman didn’t show up to do the job?
Didn’t think so.
We need a “two-click” rule for “May Cause Brain Damage”. :smack:
Something that I didn’t realize until fairly recently is that the Soviets had landed spacecraft on the moon before '69. What made the U.S. trip memorable was that it was a manned mission. So faking the moon landing would have been nonsensical, since the Soviet Union could have seen whether or not a manned mission actually occurred, and not just by watching the rocket go into orbit.
Actually, while far from convincing, the complete list has about a dozen or so, and this post lists only the two least sensible ones, accidental or not. The entire list, while far from concrete proof, is a lot more interesting than this post makes it out to be. I don’t know how to link but much better clue lists are out there.
What people here are saying is that there was virtually zero chance of pulling off a fake successfully - many many people with expertise in the relevant fields would be able to spot the fake. So any gain in prestige the US would get by successfully faking being first, would be more than offset by the virtual certainty of being humiliated to the whole world.
The other “clues” from that site that people would rather believe in over reality:
Stuffed bears representing the Soviet Union.
The word “all” being a secret code for “A11”(Apollo 11).
A character dies in this horror movie, and this is supposed to represent some people that were killed because Kubrick told them the big secret.
Holy shit, this is brain-cell destroying crap.
Fair enough. As I said, the entire point of the post was to see if anyone knew of anyone making any such claims, like some ‘in the know at the time’ have done with Area 51 and dead alien autopsies. I looked online and couldn’t find anything, was hoping for an out of print book reference or something, not the resulting tut-tut from the cognoscenti.
Indeed so. So did the US. The major accomplishment was landing a crew and having them return.
Even before Apollo 11, there were a couple Apollo missions that orbited the moon without landing. Test runs, basically. These don’t elicit the same level of conspiracy theory furor, however.
