I recently got the new issue of Sierra Club’s magazine, and it lists the outings for 2015. I’ve only been camping a couple of times before, and I see they offer a few trips for beginners in California. I also like kayaking, so the kayaking trips sound appealing also.
Has anybody gone on Sierra Club’s outings, and how was your experience? Any advice?
The Sierra Club trips are generally well run, fun for all, but fairly expensive. If you have limited camping experience and the trip is designed for beginners I think you should have a good time.
There are other less expensive options but I generally wouldn’t trust them unless I had personal experience (or a friend had some) until you’re a little more experienced. SC does a good job with beginners.
I did the Sierra Club Wilderness Basics course in San Diego.* I’d recommend looking into it.
I was actually considering joining and creating a subgroup (Motorcycle Camping) and doing a lecture for their Wilderness Basics series (Camping Cheap: Minimizing the initial investment by repurposing items at home) but then I got transferred to a new location and my plans went out the window.
Looking through their monthly activities lists, though, I got the impression that their “outings” were primarily social activities (Movie Nights, day hikes, weekend hikes, spectator sports nights, beer gatherings, etc.) organized for like-minded people – it seemed like SC was a singles club that facilitates group dates. If that’s what you’re looking for, there are (also) Meet Ups of all kinds in all areas and you can find them on the Internet.
