So Gnarls Barkley just released their sophomore album, and while it may not be quite as catchy as the last one (there’s no breakout hit like Crazy) I think I’ll like the album as much as St. Elsewhere .
So has anyone else heard *The Odd Couple* yet? It's got a real 60's vibe but never feels outdated to me. *Who's Gonna Save My Soul* is probably my favorite (it's great to listen to while driving around at night.)
Any other opinions?
Hearing Crazy over and over again made me crazy. I didn’t even think it was that revolutionary to begin with, and it was way overplayed. I also didn’t appreciate their “cover” of The Violent Femmes’ Gone Daddy Gone, which added nothing.
Is it darker in its tone and mood than St. Elsewhere? Like the only songs I really liked on SE were the really darker lyrics like Monster, Crazy, and the other one that I can’t think of right now.
RoOsh, I don’t think the lyrics are much darker, but the album doesn’t sound quite as poppy in general to my ears. *Would Be Killer * (obviously) has the darkest lyrics on the album but doesn’t sound entirely serious, kind of like Monster on SE; Open Book with its odd tribal beat is probably the heaviest. Also, the aforementioned Who’s Gonna Save My Soul has a similar bleak feel.
There are still some songs that are obviously tongue in cheek, like *Blind Mary* , where the main character falls in love with a woman who "has no idea he's ugly." Overall, I'd say the mood of the new album, while different than SE, is pretty comparable.
I haven’t heard the new album, but I have not been a huge fan of Gnarls Barkley. I will give Cee-lo this, though…he opened my mind to Southern Hip-Hop more than any other artist has been able to do. As a part of Goodie Mob, he made me almost consider it a true form of hip-hop. Almost.
So I usually try to give anything he does a fair shake.
