Any good cheap hearing devices?

Good hearing aids are about $3000 or so, and for many (including me) wouldn’t be covered by health insurance.

See, for about a month/month-and-a-half a year my head gets congested enough that I am really hard of hearing - the doctor said I have very narrow eustachian tubes. Claritin hasn’t cleared it; sudafed hasn’t cleared it. He tells me it’ll clear up in a few weeks (and it does, but more like 5 or 6 weeks). I’m sick of cupping my ear all the time, asking people to repeat themselves, etc., and it gets a little worse each winter.

On TV, there’s an ad for a device that looks like a blue-tooth cell-phone-in-your-ear setup - Bell and Howell Silver Sonic. Can’t find any reviews of it online.

Has anyone used it, or a device like it? What was your experience?

Those things don’t work at all - my dad got himself one for Christmas one year, and my nephew got a Surveillance GI Joe With Real Spying Dish. Joe’s dish worked a hell of a lot better than that as seen on TV thing, if that tells you anything.

No advice on the hearing device, but has your doctor given you any nasal spray for your ears? That Nasonex stuff works wonders for me and it is non-addictive. I’ve never done well with decongestants but nasal spray always hits the spot for me, and keeps my eustachian tubes clear and un-inflamed.

Google “hunter hearing aid”. Lots of low cost options down to around $20.00.

Should be perfect for your temporary condition.

Thanks for the responses so far. I’ll try Nasonex, and I’m looking up hunter hearing aid right now.

An older lady that I know uses one of those Sonic Earz that look like you’re wearing headphones.

She swears by it and says it works better than her actual hearing aid and I know I don’t have to shout at her anymore. Could be worth a few bucks to try out.
