Yeah, when I was a kid the dogs got pills wrapped in braunschweiger.
She’s feeling better than she was- she’s eating all her food again- but she’s not eating it all at once like she used to.
Update: good news! She really likes liver. And it’s easy to just mush up and put a pill inside.
Bad news: Something about eating liver makes her bite the pill and spill toxic chemo powder. Thank you, Tikva, you do this on purpose to drive me crazy, don’t you?
Well, I’ll think of… something. If I experiment enough I’m bound to find a solution, right?
Has the vet tried/shown you how to just pop the pill in by pulling her head back? Depends on the cat, but we could do that with our cats.
Otherwise, did you try cream cheese? My pets all love cheese, I usually put pills in cheddar, but if you want her to swallow whole, something soft would be better.
I’m glad she’s feeling better ![]()
EDIT: she still gets the yummy, just after you’ve popped the pill in.
We’ve had some luck with pills wrapped in butter for the cat, I would imagine you’d have the same issue you have with the liver…but its worth a try.
(The dogs are so darn easy when it comes to meds, they’ll eat anything wrapped in cheese or peanut butter and only chew when necessary, I’ve seen a stolen pork chop go down whole…cats are much harder.)
My cat takes pills wrapped in yellow American cheese.
Yes, dogs will wolf it down, the cats want to lick things. Just what you don’t want them doing because they just lick off the yummy and leave the pill. I was lucky with my cat that had a chronic condition that he was easy to give pills to.
Kong makes a training paste in a variety of flavors, one of which is liver.
I have had good luck with the Greenies brand of pill pockets.Amazon carries various flavors. I find them at all of the big pet stores. CostCo carries a different brand of pill pockets that my dog likes, but I haven’t tried what they have for cats. Another resource to check maybe?
I was going to suggest that.but wasn’t sure how cats are with dairy. We never ate American cheese but kept a package of “dog cheese” around for pilling dogs.
Current dog will just eat his current meddies. Must be flavored or something.
I have a cat who loves nutrient gel, so grinding the pills into that works pretty well.
My dog is currently taking pills wrapped in the Greenie duck and pea pill pocket. It smells pretty bad to me but Pepper loves it.
It’s such a small amount, even if a cat was lactose intolerant (which many are), it shouldn’t cause any issue. Cheese also isn’t such a problem as straight milk (at least in people), the lactose can be low in amount, or converted. I’ve never noticed any of my pets react poorly when I’ve used Philadelphia to convince them to swallow something (although I’ve never had a daily meds need for it, Tiger was open the mouth and pop the pill in type).
We’ve had success with balling up soft sandwich bread around the pill and feeding it to the dogs. Haven’t tried with a cat, but I’ve known cats who would bite into a plastic-wrapped loaf of sliced bread at every opportunity.
