Yes, I got Reddit Gold last week for a particularly zingy comment. (Yay me.) A day or so later, I noticed some of my comments were hanging up and not posting. (I’d get a “Submitting…” notice that normally lasts a split second but now hung permanently.)
Currently, I can browse but not contribute so much as an up- or downvote, let alone a comment. I would post to /r/techsupport if I could - but I can’t.
Anyone had such an issue with Reddit recently? If so, what was the cause/resolution? (I run an oldish version of Safari, 6.2something, on a 2012 MacBook.) TIA…
I’ve been gilded and never noticed this. What I do notice is on a small number of forums I’m not allowed to post, but I think that is due to auto-bans for posting on the wrong forums. However that is only 1 or 2 subreddits and I could still up or downvote, I just can’t post on them.
I think it is unrelated, at least that is my assumption.
I’ve never used Reddit, but as a programmer I can’t think of any reason that someone would code a website to hang if someone tried to post, even if they were banned from the site. It makes more sense to just hide the post button or show a message that informs you of your status.
I’d suggest either that your browser has become incompatible with their server in some way (which you should be able to test if you have a modern cellphone and choose "Open in Desktop Mode), or that the site is being swamped by hackers or through organic traffic caused by the new President (as I don’t know which direction Redditors tend to lean, I couldn’t say which branch would be the ones swamping it).
Periodically, I get into a state on reddit where if I click on upvote or downvote or reply or whatever, nothing happens. I can still read everything and click on links just fine.
Closing all browser windows, then re-launching the browser and logging in again fixes it.
Another vote for thinking it’s a compatibility issue instead of being banned.
Reddit is a huge site with a ton of different sub-communities. Every single “subreddit” has different moderators, rules, etc. You can get banned from one but not others. I don’t know if it’s possible to get banned from the entire site at once without doing something horrible at least.
Also, being gilded just means someone liked your comment enough to pay money for it (the money goes to reddit, but the writer of the comment gets some additional benefits). Doesn’t give you any additional rep that would prevent a ban.
By policy, Reddit will inform you if you have been banned now. Before that, you would be shadowbanned, just like a spammer, where you could still post but no one could see it. You have not been banned.
That said, getting gold will not stop them from banning you if you violate the rules. That would be like the mods here not banning you because someone bought you a subscription. All gold means is that some poster thought it was worth $4 to tell you they really liked your post.
I’ve been guilded several times, but it didn’t stop them from temporarily banning me–policy also is to unban you if you promise not to do it again.
