Seeing all the hoopla surrounding the position polls this week, I was idly wondering if there would be interest for this as well. Feel free to express your support and/or pontificate.
I think it might be an interesting exercise. I say yes!
Didn’t Marley or someone do this last summer? I think we should let the current run of “Best XX Player” threads run their course first.
I started it four years ago and didn’t finish. My bad, plus someone was being a huge jerk about it and complaining about how I was doing it.
I’d happily help with another try.
That was a lot of fun. Was that really four years ago? Four? It feels like last year. I’d be interested in another go-round.
How would it work? Don’t we have polls each year at HOF voting time? So, there are records of how the SDMB would vote on our HOF ballots.
Well, we could just go back to 1938 and start voting for each (simulated) year-is once every 2 weeks enough time? 1 week? 1 month? A week might work best, if we precede each vote with a discussion thread (while the previous year is being voted on). I’d stick with the actual HoF’s voting rules, 10 max per ballot (20 tho for the first year), 75% to get in.
If we do a week for every year since 1938, I think it would never get done - we’d be at it for more than a year, and eventually momentum would just kind of fade away.
I have seen it done before, I think on rec.sport.baseball starting in 1998. It was one player per year, starting in 1921. I poked around looking for it and apparently its web page only exists on the Wayback Machine these days: Virtual Hall of Fame.
I also found this depressing profile of Voros McCracken, the guy who invented DIPS.
