Any Macster users out there?

So I’m LOVING the iBrooke. And it loves me. It told me so in SimpleText. I also just downloaded Macster, and now that I have a computer with a fast processor, can listen to MP3s. Anyone out there a Macster user? Can we still trade with Napster users? I am confused. Also, when a person’s ping is listed as timeout, does that mean that they are signed off the system?

I have thusfar downloaded Guster’s (where’s Wonko?) cover of “Sympathy for the Devil” which ROCKS, and their cover of 99 Red Balloons. Personal history with that song, long story. For that reason, I am currently downloading the new Goldfinger cover of 99 Red Balloons (which rocks HARDCORE!) and REM’s Everybody Hurts, because I adore Automatic for the People, but am too damn cheap to replace my stolen copy.Next up will be some Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, to round out my Macster Cover Getting Expedition. (ooooh, I absolutely LOVE covers…). I have a mere 56k modem (until I take this puppy to the media lab and hook her up to ethernet…) but my username is SwimmingRiddles (original, huh?) over on Macster.

Anyone have any good finds? I know we had a Napster thread a while back, but this is different. It’s macier.

Wow…what timing. I somehow got on a comedy kick tonight, and as I type Macster is downloading a half dozen Bill Cosby routines.

I haven’t tried uploading with Macster, because (1) I don’t have anything especially rare and (much more importantly) (2) too many colleges have already banned Napster from their systems due to system overloads from uploads.

As far as the timeout, I think that’s just the response past some waiting time. I have successfully connected to machines that listed timeouts.

Macster’s cool.

I’m not positive, but I think Macster works by connecting to Napster’s servers. So yes, you are interacting with Napster users when you upload/download.

Optimus (my Mac) can’t handle no mp3s. Hell, he can barely handle AOL. But I implore you to look for Phish’s bluegrass cover of “Gin 'n Juice” by Snoop Doggy-Dogg. I have it on my computer in work, and it’s great fun.

And while I’m here: I love Macs. I wish I could afford a new one. sigh Prolly end up getting a Wintel machine, though, when it comes time to make the purchase. Weep for me.

Do a search for “Dennis Miller.”

Someone digitized the audio for his HBO show. Every episode. The whole episode.

It’s awesome.

I just turn in on at work, while I’m Exceling away, Dennis tells me the gospel!

 Say it ain’t so, Lux!

::weeps for Lux Fiat::

Oh my god, it’s a fate worse than death.
OK everyone, get out yer loose change and we’ll see if we can sub Lux a few quid (probably dollars actually) for a mac. My G4 rocks. My home 'puter, an SE/30 does not.

Macster does indeed use Napster servers and kicks ass! A timeout is bad news. That means the computer to which you are attempting to connect is either offline or not accepting new data requests. Usually, I sort my results page by ping and try to use only the fastest connections for attaining the stuff I want. There is so much available that I just can’t justify waiting for a file that’s being transferred slowly. When I come across a situation when I can’t find the track I want with a reasonable transfer rate, I just move on and try for that track again a few hours later and hope for better results.

My handle is Tympc (‘bout as original as yours). If my name comes up, don’t bother trying to download files from my machines. I’ve got networking issues that prevent me from uploading right now. This really sucks because I’ve got some wonderfully rare files that I’d like others to have. Ah well. One of these days I’ll get it straightened out.

Lux,

Have you looked into used G3s? There are a lot available out there. A used Mac kicks the crap out of a brand spankin’ new Wintel box. Don’t give into the dark side!

Oh…Lux. I am so sorry. Tell you what, you can play with the iBrooke at the next Doperfest.

So here’s my question: Is there a way to show more than 100 search results? Say I want to browse what they have up by a certain band. But like 70 of the results that came back are timeouts. Is there a way to search for the REST of the results? Or a way to specify that I don’t want timeouts to be reported? I figured out the value of the ping feature last night, and got pretty picky. Nothing over 300 ms, if possible, using the line speed search option.

SWIDDLES

check out the 7 Seconds version of 99 Red Balloons, too. I think that version kicks ass. It’s on the Walk together, Rock together album.

Swiddles,

There is still no way to broaden the search beyond the first 100 hits. Remember, though, that Macster is still in beta. I expect that will be one of the primary improvements of the next rev. since that is, currently, the most limiting element of Macster.

I suggest that you not look only at ping but also at line speed. On occasion, I find some servers have a delay in responding to an initial request, but the transfer rate is delightfully zippy when those machines do engage. Not displaying ping replies of more than 300 ms might hamper your tune pirating pleasure.

Swiddles- My handle on Napster is shoebox1969, try to put me on your hotlist and see if you can “see” me with macster. I’ve got a bunch of Guster stuff shared, so feel free!

Must… get… new… Mac…
Have to try out… OS X beta…

gasp

need…

money…
Oh, and to keep it on topic, I’m using Macster too. Best find so far: REM on Sesame Street performing “Furry Happy Monsters” with the Muppets.

Macster will not be able to display any more than 100 results. Apparently, the Napster servers will not provide any more than this. Makes sense when you think about the volume of requests.

You can learn all sorts of neat stuff by visiting the Macster site. I wish I had done so before I started talking out of my butt . . .

I’ve been using Macster for quite a while now, and I love it. It works great on my G4… now if I only had better than a 56K connection.

Ironic you should mention Automatic For The People… I was just listening to that in the car the other day.
