Any Mail-Based Movie Rental Services Besides Netflix and Blockbuster

Here’s the thing: My night job requires me to do about 1 1/2 hours worth of work in a 13-hour shift. The other 11.5 hours I’m free to watch TV, sleep, do crossword puzzles, etc. (and my boss has made it expressly clear that I’m allowed to do so) so long as I don’t leave the building. Basically I’m paid to be a warm body in the chair.

I’ve decided to kill some time by catching up on movies that I’ve been meaning to watch. But with 11-hour stretches to kill, several days per month, the 3 DVD’s at a time that I’m allowed by the maximum Netflix and Blockbuster plans aren’t going to cut it. I’m going to need, like, five or six or more.

Is there any similar service that allows me to have more than 3 DVD’s out at a time?

TIA

Apparently Greencine offers up to 8-out plans:

So does zip, but it’s only available in Canada.

Walmart used to offer a DVD-by-mail service, but I’m not sure if they still do.

FYI, our Netflix turns around pretty quickly. If I mail the DVD back on Monday, I get a new one by Wednesday. So if you belonged to two services, you may be OK.

Your public library allows you to check out 5 DVDs at one time.

Netflix also streams movies - if you have a good Internet connection that allows streaming, this is an option.

Note that you can get Netflix subscriptions that lets you have four, five, six, seven or eight DVDs at a time.

Yes, Netflix.

And if 8 isn’t enough, get two accounts?

Netflix does offer an unlimited-rentals, eight-at-a-time plan. It’s not heavily advertised, but it might be worth it for you.

I would use the Netflix streaming option if possible, if I were you.

BUT - Everybody has stayed on topic and not asked the most important question. What is your job? You “work” a 13 hour shift and only have 90 minutes of actual work and your boss is ok with you doing whatever you want the rest of the time?

It’s not as awesome as it sounds. 13 hours is a long-ass time.

…and are you hiring?

It’s my night job, and I’m just doing it to pick up some extra bux. I’m a care provider in a group home for developmentally disabled adult men. But these men are all low-maintenance, self-sustaining guys who care for themselves and stay out of each others’ (and the employees’) hair. The boss just wants a warm body in the office when she’s not there in case the place burns down, one of the residents gets sick, etc.

And RNATB nailed it: 13 hours is a long-ass time.

I spent two years running twelve hour shifts exclusively. Two days, two nights, four days off.

I’m glad I did this when I was younger, I don’t think I could handle it now.

Really? I’m only seeing 1, 2 and 3 DVD plans. They must not advertise their bigger plans very heavily. I’ll check MikeS’s link. Thanks!

Perfectly reasonable. There are times a security system won’t do the job - this is one of them.
