Any Monuments to Lincoln in Richmond--the heart of the Confederacy?

Statues dedicated to Confederate officers obviously abound in Richmond, Virginia, but is there a statue dedicated to Abraham Lincoln?

Not as far as I know. There was a big stink here a couple of years ago when the Powers that Be wanted to put up a mural of Robert E. Lee…

And there was the contraversy a few years before that about a statue of Arthur Ashe going up on Monument Avenue…

My informal poll of the room (two uninterested observers), one of whom has lived here for at least 35 years, the answer is, “Nope.”

Doesn’t seem that way. Here is the official website of Richmond, and they don’t mention a Lincoln monument anywhere. A search for “Lincoln” yielded four results - 3 daily police reports mentioning 813 Lincoln Avenue and a Lincoln Manor Boys & Girls Club in a list of Boys & Girls Clubs. That seems to be it as to things named after Lincoln in Richmond.

Now, as to who they do have monuments to, there is a Monument Avenue with 6 statues - Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, General J.E.B. Stuart, Confederate naval officer Matthew Fontain Maury, who the site mentions is the father of modern oceanography and is credited with inventing the electronic torpedo, and tennis star Arthur Ashe, Jr. There is also a monument to Confederate soldiers and sailors and a monument to actor Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.

I lived in Richmond for a couple years, and don’t remember any Lincoln monuments. However, I once came across a military unit’s marker in a local park, and the list of campaigns included “Pickett’s Charge”.

Just curious–why would they want a monument to Lincoln? He wasn’t even an officer. They probably don’t have a statue of Ulysses S. Grant, either. So? [shrug]

I’ve lived in Richmond 20 years now and can tell you that there isn’t one.

I can also tell you that several years ago there was a suggestion to put a statue of Martin Luther King on Monument Avenue. One of our more enlightened City Council members said (and I am not making this up): “Why that would be like putting a toilet in your living room.”

Amazing.
