Any other Dopers do this?

I have around 500 CD’s. Well, somewhere between 400 & 500. I haven’t actually counted all of them in about 2 years. Something to put on the to-do list

Anyhoo, of those 400ish, there are probably almost 150 that I have either never listened to or have only listened to them once or twice, and then I only listened to 1 or 2 songs. Right now the majority of my CD’s are up in the attic and so it’s a bit of a hassle to go up and hunt around for something to listen to.

Also, I bought maybe 35% of my CD’s for one specific song, and I’m talking about album length CD’s here, not CD singles. Sadly, I have to do this because CD singles are few and far between at least compared to the good old days when they still made 45’s.

So, any Dopers do either of the things I went thru above?

C’mon, don’t be shy, we’re all friends here.

I recently went through and culled the duds from my collection. Most of them go for pretty good prices on Amazon.com Marketeplace. At least 50-75% of the original price as long as they’re in good condition. With the proceeds, I get to buy more music!

I have noticed that more CD singles seem to be available recently, though.

I buy a lot of CDs and they ain’t all winners.

But I hate to admit (even to myself) that I’ve bought a clunker. After I listen to a CD five or six times and realize that I’m actually forcing myself to listen to it, then I finally realize that “hey, maybe I just don’t like this CD.”

Culling the duds and selling 'em on Amazon sounds like a great idea.

I have a very strong aversion to buying a CD for just one song. The problem with me is that I tend to only like a song or two from most bands. And those songs usually seem to be on separate albums.

So if I bought CDs, I’d wind up just like you, WSLer, only worse. And at ten bucks a pop, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself for having wasted all that money.

I have taken to consolidating my CD’s. I just bought a new CD player for my car that plays Mp3’s. I just rip all my CD’s onto my hard drive, and burn them on mp3 cD’s. I can fit on average 200 songs on a disc, and it works well. The CD player will display album titles, song names, artists, etc. Its really great.

Yeah, i have a completely digitised music collection - every time i buy a cd it gets ripped onto a computer whose sole purpose is to store my music.

From there it gets transferred to my mp3 player, or burnt into “play according to mood whilst at work” compilation cds.

Probably unethical of me, but I took a lot of the 1 or 2 song disks, ripped the songs I liked from them, and then got rid of them, either giving them to friends who wanted them or selling them if I could.

The good part is, with a few of them, when I went through to try and get the songs I liked off of them, often I found that I liked the disc more than I thought and ended up keeping it.

I’ve never been big on paying for music. I own maybe 20-30 CDs and listen to only a fraction of them, and then only rarely – usually leave them playing when I go to bed.

Of all my CDs, I’m sure about 10-15% were presents, so no big deal about cash.

I actually like to listen to the [gasp] radio! or tapes I have made/had friends make for me over the years. Sometimes these are also completely taped directly from the radio.

I have zero songs digital. I don’t even know how to download them from the Internet.

My only (home) computer is my laptop, which I wouldn’t want to fill up with music anyway.

I am very much not into the way people get music nowadays. Just not into the whole computer/mp3/digital thing.

As a side note, I also don’t know how to use a CD burner or scanner.

Heh. I guess I’m old before my time. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve also got a ton of CD’s that have never gotten played, or played all the way through. If you have a multi-disc player, load it up and put it on Random Play. You’d be surprised how many hidden cool songs you come across that happen to be far back on the list.

I have the problem of disappearing CD’s. They’re not stolen, they don’t leave the house, but I recall a certain disc that I bought a year or so ago, look for it, and nothing. Never seen again.
