I’ve never been out of the U.S., but always wanted to go. I hope to go in the next couple of years. There are so many places I want to see. Ireland, especially, has always “called” to me. My passport application is sitting on top of a bookshelf waiting for me to finish filling it out…
Never left NA, never expect to.
I finally went to Europe for the first time ever last year when I was 37. We spent two weeks exploring Venice, Florence, Rome and the Amalfi coast.
Fabulous trip. I cannot recommend Italy enough. Venice is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. I could sit on a vaporetto and go down the Grand Canal every single day of my life.
Florence was nice but a bit of a letdown after Venice. We found it pretty but a bit dirty with an uneasy alliance between the old city and the modern one.
Rome was astonishing. The ancient Roman ruins are endlessly fascinating and we loved the Vatican museum. I’m sorry we only had three days there. The city is very walkable with great public transportation. It’s also an amusing place to just wander around it. At one point I ducked into a church to go to the ladies room. And found myself staring in awe at all the artwork everywhere because I’d walked into the church of Saint Ignatius Loyola.
Sorrento is just lovely. The town is small but glorious. We took a day trip to Capri and I’m sorry we didn’t stay there a week. I’ve heard it labeled a tourist trap but we enjoyed every minute of that pretty island.
The food was just as good as we’d imagined with only the very occasional tourist trap. My favorite place was Trattoria Za-Za in Florence. I had the best pasta of my life there. Even the food at the Naples airport was impressive. I had a hand stirred asparagus risotto tended by a fierce Italian little old lady who heaped it on.
We were also delighted to find that a car wasn’t really necessary to get around and that Italian trains were surprisingly well kept and very easy to use.
I’m just sorry the euro’s so high right now. My husband and I would go back there in five seconds.
The Czech Republic used to be cheap… thanks to a strong Crown and a weak dollar it is not that way any more.
Hmmm… Depending on your reasons for the Seychelles, you might consider the Maldives instead - much better value for money. That said, the ancient rain forest on Praslin is wonderful. Funny how different our top 10 lists are.
(in no particular order)
- Pakistan
- Afghanistan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Algeria
- North Korea
- Madagascar
- Cameroon
- Iceland
- Chile
- Argentina
What on earth would induce you to go and visit North Korea?
Actually North Korea is near #1 on my places to visit… there is no place else like it, and once their system changes, it will become like everywhere else in the post-communist world. Tourism there is not easy, but I’d love to go.
One of the old farms on the edge of town has a concrete & cinderblock outhouse.
If you’d settle for an approximation.
I know…I ain’t been there…still…
Does it have a giant statue of the Great Leader outside with proper revolutionary music playing?
We could put a Velvet Elvis inside, & play Hound Dog on a cheap 8 track.
