Places You've Never Been

We’re a pretty well-traveled and opinionated group . . . So “our favorite places” and “least-favorite places” have, I think, been covered.

But where do you want to go that you’ve not yet been?

• France—specifically, Paris. I hope to make it in “aught-one.”

• Australia. Love those Aussies! If only it didn’t take 195 hours of consecutive flight . . .

• The Midwest. You people who live there might think it’s hell on earth, but as an East Coaster, I wanna SEE those “fly-over states.”

• The Denmark–Sweden area of the world. Y’know, fjords ‘n’ such.

How about y’all?

Washington DC
Ireland
Some uninhabited mountain area - Either Washington State or southern Canada

Eve,
When you’re ready to come out to the Midwest, let me know. There’s not a lot of populace, but there is a lot of very interesting history out here…(echoing fades)

Love to go to Ireland, Scotland, England, Israel…oh too many more. I’m envious of all you world travelers.

For me,

Japan: I’ve always been fascinated with Japanese culture.

Austrailia: I hear Austrailian women are such BABES!! Oops, did I say that?

Las Vegas: To see the Magic show headliners, of course. (If you don’t know already, I’m a magician.)

Paris – been to southern France, but never the City of Light. Got a Parisian friend who owes me, too

Japan – always wanted to see the land of The Seven Samurai and Godzilla (I get too much of life from the movies)

Hawaii – always looks great in pictures, even if it’s as expensive as they say.

Australia

Vienna

Madrid

I’d like to sail the length of the Danube River, from the Black Forest to Bulgaria.

And the Rhine, too, for that matter.

And I’d like to sail among the seaward Skerries, the little islands off the Swedish coast.

Awfully watery, huh? So we’ll throw in a cruise to Antartica…that counts as a continent.

East Africa - mum grew up there.

Montana - to go out into the middle of nowhere and see stars upon stars (can’t do that on the East Coast)

Hawaii - ever since reading James Michener’s novel

Northern Ireland - already been to the Republic

Scandinavia - to see the Land of the Midnight Sun

Turkey - born there but haven’t been back since

There’s scads more -

Alaska is the only state I haven’t visited.

Cuba, Iceland, and Tasmania were all on my agenda at one time, as I traveled nearby, but were denied me by erratic ferryboat services.

The only 2 that I still want to go to that I’ve never been are Niagra Falls and Hawaii. And I cna’t think of a single reason why for either one - just cuz.

  1. The Hoover Dam, just outside Las Vegas. I’m only about a 4 hour drive away, but for some reason, I’ve never been there. Think I’ll go sometime this summer.

  2. Hawaii. Particularly somewhere on the North Shore. Everyone is always talking about the size of the waves there. I wanna see what the all the hype is about.

  1. South America - Argentina specifically, don’t know why.
  2. The Carolinas - for some reason they always conjure up images of big shady trees, old-southern style houses and nice weather (except the hurricanes, obviously)
3.Iceland. Antarctica. (These seem to be surprisingly popular. Can we get a SDMB group discount?)
  3. San Antonio. I have no idea why, either.
  4. Vietnam.
  5. Mongolia. This place just seems totally fascinating to me, like it’s the land that the world forgot. From the Mongol empire to being the second communist country on earth, it has all kinds of history that nobody ever thinks about. Mongolia seems to be just far out wacky and weird. Everything I’ve read about it confirms it. However, I did get a little worried when one guide book described the Mongolian diet as mutton. Not, “gee, they eat more mutton than most countries” or “their diet is based on mutton” but THATS ALL THAT THEY EAT. According to one book about Mongolia, everything smells like rancid mutton fat - public phones, bank notes, you name it. Granted, from what I understand, right now Mongolians would be happy to eat anything. (It’s been a brutal winter there and livestock is dying off). Still, I’m intrigued by this place.

For some reason, even as a little kid, I have never had any remote interest in going to Disneyland.

MissBunny - East Africa is amazing. I’d go back tomorrow if I had the chance.

I’ve always wanted to drive through the Rocky Mountains. I did that last month. I heard that Snoqualmie Falls were really cool. Saw those last month too. I guess I’m pretty comfortable where I am right now. But I suppose a trip to Florida wouldn’t hurt. I guess I’d like to see New York City too. I can’t say I’ve ever had the desire to leave the US though. Never thought about it much. Except Italy. Anywhere in Italy. I’ll go someday.

Congratulations. The fjords are in Norway
