What is the country you most want to visit?

I don’t mean revisit. I mean one you haven’t yet been to but just have a “thing” about.

Mine is Laos.

Great Britain. My ancestors are from England, Scotland and Wales. I feel an inexplicable kind of affinity for it, and I think I’d feel right at home. I want to see the places firsthand that I’ve only read about or seen in pictures, and meet the people. Even if I never go anywhere else, I want to see Britain before I die.

I want to visit New Zealand. I want like hell to live in Australia. Never been to either.

That’s funny. Australia would have been my answer to this question two years ago. It was the one place I really wanted to live in without ever having set foot in the place.

I’ve wanted to go to Mongolia ever since I was a little child. I had a National Geographic poster that had pictures of nomadic Mongolians on their horses. That appeals to me. The likelihood of me ever getting their is pretty slim, but who knows? I can’t imagine the nomads are big on tourists. I’d also like to see London and I’ve made my husband promise me that we’d go to Christchurch, NZ* for our 10th anniversary. That one should be easier to swing because he’s Australian and we’ll be due for a visit back right around that time (two years from now).

*That’s another childhood wish…there was a child abduction case, of all things, that was widely publicized when I was a kid. The mother took the child to Christchurch to escape the allegedly abusive father. The news was showing pictures of Christchurch nightly and I decided I’d really like to go there. I wonder whatever happened to that girl…she’d be close to 30 now.

New Zealand is at the top of my list. There are a number of countries I’d like to visit that I’ll never see because of their politics or my country’s. But NZ bypasses all that.

I would vote for Turkey. I have heard incredible things about it and the exotic mix of cultures.

I’d like to go to Turkey, too. And Greece, Thailand, Australia, Poland, Costa Rica, and Israel. Among others.

Does Hong Kong count?
(It used to be sort of a country!)

It’s not just the food, but the amazing annual Rugby Sevens tournament.

Ireland. Such a beautiful, rugged country…

Hong Kong counts! And we’re off to the Rugby Sevens there next year!

Ireland. I want to study Yeats in Sligo.

Australia. I love Mick Dundee!

“Now that’s a knife!”

I’ve always wanted to go to Mustang (which is a kingdom protectorate of Nepal), or nearby Bhutan. However, Bhutan’s kind of out as not only is there a limited number of places to visit the country every year, and it’s expensive to get there, but I’m an inveterate smoker and tobacco has recently been made totally illegal in that country.

I’m thinking Italy. My current plan is to re/visit various bits of Europe before and after attending the next International Conference on LGBT Rights in Copenhagen in 2009.

Fantastic!

May I ask where you got (or are planning to get) your tickets + accomodation?
I’m going to invite a group of friends next year and would appreciate a heads-up.

Japan and China. My bro-in-law just moved to China last week so I will most likely visit China soon. They seem very foreign for me and I have no idea how I will eat the food but I still want to go.

I can’t speak for the others but Costa Rica is very cool and very tourism-centered+American friendly. The whole place is like one big ecotourism theme park.

Greece…I’ve always wanted to sit on a mountain in Hydra or Santorini, drink wine and have lunch with a beautiful view!
