Any other uses for cola other than "cola"

I can’t imagine that the discovery of the cola tree was so recent as to coincide with the birth of the soda fountain.

Yet, I can’t think of a single other use for cola other than as flavoring for the carbonated beverage that made Atlanta proud (O.K., O.K., Atlanta has never been lacking in the “pride” department, but you know what I mean).

Question 1
So how have the fruits, leaves, and nuts of the noble Cola tree been used over the years?

Question 2
Also, as carbonated beverages became popular how is it that the cola flavored variety became most popular of all?
.

Here is the nearest thing I could find describing the cola tree.

The leaves of the tree were chewed to release a mild stimulant.

BTW, cola adds no flavoring to cola. The primary flavor elements are vanilla, citrus, and cinnamon. Since they are blended together, it seems like a new flavor.

I’m not even sure the cola adds any color, either, since they use caramel color in it.
