Any Pat Buchannan supporters out there?

Tell us why you support Pat Buchannan>

Well, I think he does a real good job. He keeps track of the letters called, he makes sure contestants spin the wheel in the proper order, he…oh, wait, that’s Pat Sajack. Never mind.

Ok, I’ll bite. I used to like Pat Buchanan a lot. Back in the '80s when he was on CNN’s Crossfire his views seemed to match up well with the things I believed. I even bougth his book Right from the Beginning published in (let’s see…checking shelf), 1988. I recall enjoying it quite a bit.

Pat is a very likable guy. Even the liberals inside the Beltway have good things to say about his sense of humor and his personality. I remember someone quoted as saying regardless of politics, if there was one politician you wanted at your holiday party, Pat the was guy.

But then he changed. Or at least, beliefs of his started coming to light that I could not support. First, he was opposed to the Gulf War. A rare position for a Republican at the time. I was in the Gulf War, and felt a little let down that this “conservative” I had respected felt like we had no business protecting the Saudis, Kuwaitis, and our oil interests from Saddam. I saw first hand what Saddam did to his own people, and was trying to do to his weaker neighbors. I’m glad we stepped in as we did. Pat was opposed.

Secondly, Buchanan came out against NAFTA. He took the tenable Republican position of stopping illeagal immigration and bastardized it into not only stopping just about all immigration, but closing off our borders to trade as well! (I realize he was far from alone in these positions). I think expanding our markets via NAFTA, GATT, and increased international trade is a good thing. Buchanan does not.

Thirdly, he is very pro-union. I am not.

Therefore, I was glad to see him leave the Republican Party and become marginalized. I still agree with certain things he would agree with, but could never support him in any type of political endeavor.

Wow. Thoses are the very things (the very few number of things) I agreed with Pat about.

Think we like any of the same movies?

Well, I like unions and I think that “The Sand Pebbles” was a really cool movie.

I got some “Buchanan Supporters” here…some sharpened sticks you can use to prop him up with.

Actually, I miss Pat being on the McLaughlin Group, not only for being able to speak his mind eloquently (I don’t agree with what he says generally, but he was able to put his thoughts to words well), but, dammit, he was a natty dresser. Has anyone watched the MG lately? Where do these guys buy their clothes anyway?! And who dresses them??!!!
…geez, thrift store clowns.

Get a clue guys (not you, Eleanor).

Here’s the deal, folks.
If we keep this on topic (i.e., people telling why they support Pat Buchannan), this topic stays here. If people chime in with personal(though perfectly justified, IMHO) jabs and differing opinions, I’ve got to move it to Great Debates.

We be clear on this?

All right, I hate to admit this, but I actually voted for Pat Buchannan for Pres. I didn’t really want him to win though and I’ve regretted it since.

The year was 1992, and I was pissed because I felt that Bush (sr) was a bit too liberal. So in the primary, I voted for Buchannan, as a “signal” that the republican party should move right. Well, they did, and some Arkansas hillbilly managed to look more central, and Bush, who only months before had enjoyed some of the highest popularity numbers ever, lost the White House.

What a mistake.

Sorry, slythe

…I’ll be good.

And a Rhodes scholar.
