I’ve seen cops patrolling on bicycles. (And on motorcycles, horses, Segways, golf carts – just about everything but skateboards or roller-skates.)

When the next great Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake shakes Portland, roads will buckle, bridges will crack and fuel will be rationed.

In fact, according to the city’s disaster planning documents, much of the city’s transportation system will be useless.

Well, useless to cars, that is.

“When it comes to preparation for a cataclysmic earthquake, we’re playing catch-up in a lot of areas,” said Ethan Jewett, co-organizer of Saturday’s third annual Portland Disaster Relief Trials outside the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

But Jewett said Portland has one emergency-response asset that most large U.S. cities can only wish they had at their disposal in a disaster: An army of bicycle commuters.

Interstate highways in particular should remain usable for centuries.

That is most definitely not true. Plants overwhelm abandoned asphalt surprisingly quickly.
