My niece had her birthday party out at the farm last week, and amongst the festivities was the making of boats. See, for the first time after several years of drought there was enough snow that spring runoff filled up the dugout, and made a lovely little creek besides. The girls were afraid to let their efforts loose on the dugout, sticking to tiny puddles, so my brother and I fulfilled our obligations as uncles, slapping together a couple makeshift sailboats. This had the desired effect of encouraging more widespread participation.
I was quite struck by how much fun our improvised efforts were, and have since taken a hankering to play with something more capable and controllable. However, some scouting hobby stores and online investigation suggests that most commercially available RC yachts are rather more expensive than my budget can allow for what is in the end just a toy. So I’ve been contemplating building something relatively simple from scratch that would be controllable with just a generic 2-channel radio. This strikes me as being more fun and satisfying than pulling a boat out of a box anyways. Any tips or pointers?
