Any recommendations for quiet, cheap, network attached storage?

I’ve had it up to here with all these damn machines I have in the study, with their their numerous drives and fileshares and whatnots. I can just about remember what has to be switched on to access an item, but my girlfriend gets all annoyed if she can’t print her patient notes or access her iTunes library because I have reconfigured something and her laptop needs to be re-educated. Plus which it would be nice to be able to back things up without switching on enough machinery to dim lights across south-east England.

So who can recommend something quiet, cheap, reliable, moderately speedy over 100mb Ethernet and both Mac & PC friendly? It would be kinda neat if it had built-in RAID too, for extra peace of mind. I reckon about 250gb of useable storage should be sufficient for a while. About £300 or so is my limit.

The Iomega Storcentre 500 looks to be a good candidate, as does the Netgear SC101 . Qnap TS-101 seems like a great deal at the price but as far as I can see does not do RAID unless you hook up another drive to it. However the most interesting looking is the Thecus YES Box NE2100 - this would appear to be ideal.

Does anyone have any comments, experience or wisdom to share?
