I’m currently working as a file clerk, and I’m finding that I really enjoy the work - organizing the filing system and the file cabinets, making it more efficient, making it as easy as possible for people to find things, and I also do some work with electronic databases. I’m thinking that I would like to become a fully fledged Records Technician, and work with paper and electronic records in a more in-depth way.
Is there anybody on these boards working in a capacity like this? If there is, what exactly do you do at your job, and how did you become qualified for it?
(I’ve looked into Medical Records Technician a little bit, but I really don’t like the idea of doing so much transcription work.)
Rhum Runner, that’s what I popped in to say, sort of.
Many schools now call them master’s in Library and information science, or just information science (as my school does).
I started a program this fall, and if you’re enjoying the organization and management of information associated with what you’re doing now, it might be something you’d like to look into. These programs aren’t just about libraries anymore, and people with MLIS, MLS or MIS degrees are working in corporations as information managers, in schools and libraries (naturally), and just about anywhere. The principles that apply to library information collection and retention, can apply to anyplace that keeps a document “library”.
On another note, it’s much tougher than I thought it would be, but just as much fun as I hoped.
That’s interesting, to hear that Librarians aren’t just in libraries anymore. I looked into become a Library Technician a couple of years ago, but I shied away from it because of the demands to retrieve stuff for the general public (the less I have to do with the general public, the better in my opinion). Working as a Library Tech in a large corporation sounds like a whole different world, though. Maybe this is something else to look into.
(Oh yeah, I’m working at a privately-owned company, doing their filing and trying very hard to come up with a better filing system for them that will keep pace with their very rapid growth.)
