I just bought a new house (new for me anyway). After some research I’ve discovered I’ll be too far away from a switching station and have to give up my beloved DSL.
The only broadband option I have is Road Runner cable. I was trying to pick the salesman’s brain about the system so I will be ready for the switch when I move (4 weeks). I mentioned that I share my DSL connection now with a Linksys router, and that it has been very satisfactory. He replied that I could share my Road Runner connection, but only with a hub, not a router. He said it had something to do with the hardware firewall messing with the system, and that I would not be able to run any kind of firewall.
People in San Diego use the Linksys routers with RoadRunner. I have a hard time thinking what they could do that would make a properly configured firewall not work. You definitely need a router not a hub. Unless roadrunner is trying to sell you to IP addresses which costs more with no benefits to most people. In which case you need a hub and not a router.
I use roadrunner here in Austin, and gazpacho is correct. You can’t share with a hub (but you can with a pc acting as a gateway with a hub behind it). I know lots of folk who use a router with no problems. In fact I got a flyer in the mail the other day from Time Warner offering to sell me one for sharing purposes!
I use RoadRunner with a 4-port LINKSYS EtherFast Cable/DSL Router which provides fire wall protection. I did have to report the MAC address of the router to MediaOne but I pay for only one internet connection and it works fine.
I share my Road Runner using Windows 98 SE Internet connection sharing, and a hub. You can use any router or proxy with Road Runner in my area (Columbus). They don’t use any mac addresses or propriatary software. They didn’t even try to give me any software. The IP addresses are dynamic, but I have had the same one for weeks at a time.
