Any software to convert sound files to text?

I’m aware that there are some software programs out there that claim to be able to convert speech to text. But as far as I’m able to tell, this involve speaking into a microphone real time and having it converted to speech then and there.

My question, though, is whether it’s possible to first record speech using some standard program like Microsoft Sound Recorder, and then later convert it directly to text. Is there any such thing?

Thanks,

DHR

Surely there must be something.

http://www.winappslist.com/utilities/voice.htm is first on the list when I did a Google search on “voice recognition wav”. There are many more hits.

There might be something out there that does a basic job, but systems that recognize words with greater than 95% accuracy still only exist in theory (unless there’s been a recent breakthrough that I’m not aware of). So no matter what you find, be prepared to double-check it.

why dont you just play it on the computer & put the microphone next to the speakers. Frankly unless you teach the program to recognize a specific person’s speech you won’t get anything.

I can’t believe someone who knows something about anything would post this. For one, as anybody knows, by doing this you are adding a ton and a half of distortion which would make it almost impossible to recognize by the speech program. Furthermore, at least in my sound card, a program does not know or care where the source is. You just select a source (mike, aux, wave, etc) and the output is directed to whatever program is using it.

I have a voice recognition program and it does not work so well… I hardly use it. Be aware that you need to train it and then you need to speak very slowly and clearly. It’s not like you can feed it a speech taken from the radio and you get the written text.
