I’m putting together a little video seminar project. The theme of the project is: “growing and expanding” (expanding and relocating Foreign business into new locations in America). I need to licence a song as a background for the video. Any suggestions? Bonus if it is an Elvis song (not for his growing and expanding belly, though :smack: ), or if it mentions Australia/America/Memphis/Jacksonville/Florida. Thanks.
I would mention No Man’s Land by Billy Joel, but it seems a little too…cynical for what you’re wanting to do.
“Omaha Stylee” by 311 is about growing, expanding, and relocating, but I don’t think you would find it appropriate for a business presentation.
Well, there’s Arlo Guthrie’s Coming into Los Angeles but I don’t think that’s the business opportunity your company wants to present.
Niel Diamond’s “Coming to America.” Ya can’t go wrong!
Sorry for the disgrace, Mr. Diamond. The man’s name is Neil.
Rush’s “Fly By Night”.
Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time” has a lot of little jokes about getting big. One couplet talks about stretching his mouth to let all those big words out.
Death Cab for Cutie’s “This Temporary Life” technically fits in, but it’s a song about being miserable for having done it.
The Rutles’ “Knicker Elastic King.”
“His global business kept expanding,
and then the slump came…”
The Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces”
Jimmy Buffet Changes in Lattitude, Changes in Attitude
“Spinning Wheel”, Blood Sweat & Tears
ABBA’s “I Wonder (Departure)”
But who the hell am I
If I don’t even try?
I’m not a coward.
Oh no, I’ll be strong.
One chance in a lifetime.
Yes, I will take it; it can’t go wrong.
Route 66 is always a good choice. “Flagstaff Arizona, don’t forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino!”
Or ‘Man on the Run’ by Cowboy Mouth. It’s about travelling to a new location (Los Angeles, in this case) to start a new life.
A better one from Rush would be ‘Dreamline’.
Heck, there must be a million of them. One of the primary forces and images in rock music is the need for motion and moving on.
Lotsa good choices! Thanks.
Mr. Tibbs
So close! You could have used Johnny Cash and June Carter’s Jackson(ville) duet!
Billy Joel’s “My Life” is about relocating to the West Coast, though it might be a bit of a downer, since one of the earliest lines is about a guy who “couldn’t go on the American way”…
Ramblin’ Man?
“We Built This City” ?
Mods - I’m purposely quoting only a single verse from each, which I believe constitutes fair use.
From Elvis’ second album titled simply “Elvis” in 1956, “Anyplace is Paradise”
[/geek hat on] The first album, also in 1956, was titled “Elvis Presley.”[/geek hat off]
Give me a cave up in the mountain
Or a shack down by the sea
And I will be in heaven honey
If you are there with me
From “It Happened at the World’s Fair” (1963) “A World of Our Own”
You say you want me, and music I hear
Touch me my darling, and clouds disappear
The sky is bright above, and cares have flown
And we’re in, a world of our own
From “Fun in Acapulco” (1963) “I Think I’m Going to Like it Here”
All this lovely scenery
There’s more to it than greenery
I know a chance for romance is always near
Mission bells are ringing, everybody’s singing
I think I’m gonna like it here
At the end of the song, he repeats the last line several times, which could be used by itself
From “Roustabout” (1965) I think THIS one has real potential
“There’s a Brand New Day on the Horizon”
There’s a brand new day on the horizon
Everything’s gonna be just fine
There’s a brand new day on the horizon
And the whole world’s gonna be mine
You want Florida mentions? There’s always “Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce” from 1965’s “Girl Happy”
Girls on the beaches commit a sin
They don’t show yards and yards of skin
Preceding message to you has been

(If I were a Valley Girl, I’d by typing OMG! over and over. The rest of the very short song is no better. But then, this is the album that also contains “Do the Clam,” certainly one of the low points in all of rock music…)
OK, that’s all the lyrics I can wade through.
This site appears to link to the lyrics of every Elvis song ever recorded.
Happy hunting.
