Any Sports Commentators You've Actually LEARNED Anything From?

Ken Venturi (yes, I know he is retired), Johnny Miller, Joe Morgan, Hubie Brown and (as tired as I get of hearing him talk) Tim Mccarver.

Joe Girardi, Joe Morgan, Lou Pinella all have been good teachers at baseball.

Joe Morgan actually said that during a playoff game a few years ago. He observed that the reason the Braves had won the previous game (over the Astros, IIRC) was that the Astros had not scored as many runs as the Braves had. I was aghast. Of course, I immediately went to get a notebook to write down this example of unparallelled genius. Were it not for the oracle of baseball wisdom that is Joe Morgan, I would never have picked up on something as subtle as the team with the most runs being awarded the win.

Has there ever been a player as great as [Joe Morgan] was that has such little understanding why he was great?

I think the answer to Yookeroo’s question is “no.”

For those who love, and those who ove to hate, Joe Morgan, i humbly offer one of my absolute favorite baseball web sites: Fire Joe Morgan

It’s not devoted exclusively to Joe, but focuses on a variety of TV, internet and newspaper commentators who say retarded shit about baseball. Not only is a lot of the critique spot on, but the writers are very witty at times.

Richie Benaud. Listening to Richie, you walk away wiser not just about the game of cricket and how it is played, but about the game of life and how it is lived. He is the master.

On the other hand, listening to any Australian Rugby League commentator for 80 minutes will degrade and injure your brain even more than getting your head kicked about actually playing the game for a whole season will.

I wasn’t always a Madden basher- far from it! In the early Eighties when he first came along, he was superb at predicting plays and explaining what was happening. He was a huge breath of fresh air (younger fans may not believe that). But he stopped doing his homework 15 years ago, and it shows.

On yeah, I’ll readily admit that Madden isn’t what he used to be. It has in fact been a while since I’ve really learned anything from him. I suppose I cling to him because I see him as one of the faces of football. It will be a sad day for me when he passes.
