Definitely one of my favorite of his. Most unpredictably unhinged. It’s actually a remKe, but I’ve never seen the original
The Lesson of the Evil
Recommended.
I do wish this one was about 20 minutes shorter, but there is a lot to like in this one, especially once things get moving in the second half.
A young, handsome teacher is very popular with his students. What they are in the dark about, though, is that one of his hobbies is killing people. Once he gets sick and tired of all the bullying and cruel treatment at school, he takes out his urge to kill on the students.
Miike-violence ensues.
Good movie, glad I had a chance to see it. It was hard to find and I had to track down a Blu-ray of it.
This review nailed it on Letterboxd:
“Holy shit Miike. It’s like Patrick Bateman or Battle Royale’s Kazuo Kiriyama was your home-room teacher and decided to chaperone the school’s Halloween party.”
Blazing Fists
Mediocre with good moments.
Two guys get out of juvenile- detention and share a goal of making and winning major fighting championship, called Blue Warriors. They work, overcome challenges, and in the end, the event itself occurs.
It was OK. It was 2 hours, but this is a 90 minute film. Competently directed, but nothing too stellar here.
Some of the fights are good fun, though.
I have edited the title for clarity.
Three…Extremes
The Box
This is actually a collection of three 40 minute films. Miike directed the third segment and I’ll focus on that.
Wow, amazing. Have you seen Imprint? That was his short film for Masters of Horror, a film so intense that even Showtime declined airing it.
This is also an amazing short film. I liked all the segments of this anthology, but Miike(his is the third and final one) had the best one. All I will say is:
A girl has dreams of being wrapped in plastic and buried in the ground. She always wakes up just as the dirt is being shoveled onto her.
It’s really weird and amazing, one of Miike’s best.
USA: Streams on Amazon Prime.
Nyaight of the Living Cat
Fun. And funny. A 12-episode anime that is mainly a comedy. Cats scratch people and turn them into cast. It’s challenging, but everyone also loves how cute they are.
Takashi Miike directed the entire thing.
It’s on Crunchy Roll.
