A twisted little movie thread... here be twisted little spoilers, I hope

Well, OK, I admit it, it’s a “please recommend” thread.

I’m a fan of movies that can only be described as, well, twisted. Warped. Very, very strange. A list of my favorites would include

*Eating Raoul
Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills
Tough Guys Don’t Dance
Eraserhead
Boxing Helena
Pulp Fiction

  • and, well, that’s all the twisted little films that come to mind at just this moment.

So, bearing in mind that I like strange, warped, twisted little movies (being good is also a plus, but not strictly necessary)…

Anything I should rent next weekend?

Baxter
Delicatessan

Most definitely worth it to rent them. You will just freak out. We loved 'em both.

Both French.

Oh, and Killing Zoe with Eric Stoltz. We saw it and bought it in the same weekend!

A heist film with a twist or two.

John Waters’ early classics Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble, Daisy and Violet Hilton in Chained for Life, the insane screwball comedy Million Dollar Legs . . .

I second Killing Zoe, and I recomend Track 29. Also, Man bites dog.

GUMMO!

Any David Lynch flick would work, but I seriously can’t recommend them to anybody (that I like at least  ). Just time wasted for weirdness sake.

“Ed Gein” was fun.

One who is twisted would do well to view Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist

This is a documentary about masochist performance artist Bob Flanagan, who died while the movie was being made. He suffered from cystic fibrosis and this inspired his work. I don’t know if the movie is available on DVD/VHS but it is worth hunting for.

Enjoy.

Geez…I can’t remember the name. But it was a goth chicks version of Frankenstein.

She was a seamstress and sewed body parts together.

Any help here?

You are thinking of “May” , and I agree. Angela Bettis is great.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, Brazil and my bestest Christmas present ever, Harold & Maude.

Please only watch the version with Terry Gilliam’s ending, not the studio version.

And I don’t know how well it’s held up over time, but I used to love to watch Videodrome back in the day. Heck, any Cronenburg is usually good and strange.

OTTOMH

Dr Caligari

This is a bizarre sequel to the German original. The film is very faithful to German Expressionism, which means that the sets, lighting, costumes, and everything else are stylized and strange. Lines include

“My feelings are like filthy prayers. I wanna scream in your face!”

“Eww. I never want to touch an icky man-thing.”

“Be polite. You could at least try a slice.”

Freaked

Actor Ricky Coogan agrees to be the spokesman for megacorp EES. Then he stumbles into a strange sideshow and is transformed into a hideous mutant freak. Lines include

“Dat sock be full of holes, mon.”

“Fourteen milkmen on one route. No wonder they fight.”

“It was Linda Blair.”

Basket Case A love story between a man and his symbyotic twin.

Is good too.

It has at least 2 sequels (there may be more I don’t know of)

In Basket Case 2 the boys are taken in by a woman who has turned her home into a secret freak commune.

“Everyday I’m getting better and better.”

“How can you be in love? You’re only half a person.”

The credits list the role “Man with 27 noses”

Basket Case 3-The Offspring

Yes, Belial is an expecting father. But, no ordinary doctor can handle this mother or this birth. It’s time for a trip to an old friend who can do the job.

“People like me, sherrif.”

“He hates doctors. He kills doctors.”

And a performance of Personality you will never forget.

gets pen, scribbles

ooh, Basket Case! I forgot about that one. That was a freakin’ cool movie. And I’ve seen Brazil quite a few times, too. Videodrome was cool, too. It always helps to take the cassette out…

I saw Delicatessan years ago and would echo the recommendation for those who like that type of movie.

Another one that I’ll mention but definitely not recommend is The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. It’s twisted all right, and **someone ** must like it. Just not me.

Kissed a little Canadian movie about the joys of necrophilia.

Tetsuo.
Odishon.
Uzumaki.

I don’t like “weird” movies, but I watch so many friggin’ movies that sometimes some sneak in here and there.

Twin Falls Idaho
eXistenz
Pi
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down (haven’t seen the whole thing, so not positive about it)
Dead Ringers

And then there are the classier “weird” movies, like:

Being John Malkovich
Adaptation

But I must mention that Killing Zoe is a personal favorite, so I heartily recommend it as well.

As I was pressing “Submit”, I remembered:

Liztomania
Lair of the White Worm

Freaky deaky, man.
