Any U.S. Marines here ?

My son is a Young Marine . He loves it and he’s doing really well with them.

This summer he went to Parris Island and ever since, he’s been lining up the neighborhood kids and drilling them. He very much wants to become a Drill Instructor and he keeps asking me how he could become a DI when he grows up.

Obviously, he’s a little too young to go ask a recruter.

Does anyone know ? He’s driving me nuts, begging for the answer.

Thanks.

Basically, you have to become an E-5, unless they changed the requirement back to E-4, be absolutely S__t hot, squared away, and highly motivated. Then you apply for a slot in Drill Instructor school, which is not for the faint hearted. Upon passing that, you will become a DI, and that also is not for the weak. Many people drop out of DI school, and quite a few DI’s hang up their cover because of the long hours and stress.

That’s really about it. DI is what is called a B billet, the same as Embassy duty and open to all who are incredibly squared away, meet the qualifications and pass the training.

I was going to add something, but the 'Dog has it covered pretty well.

As an OLD marine[WW11] remind him that it can be the loneliest job in the world.

And,particularly if time of war, one is constantly aware that the men, and women, a DI is training may never come home again.

In just 39 more days I saw my first angry beach at Bougainville-------and that was only the beginning.

If he can live with ghosts -----more power to him!
