Yes, I am generally a utilitarian. I believe society ought to have, as its goal, the greatest good for the greatest number of people. That said, I also believe that the rights of minorities ought not to be violated even if the majority wants them to be. Along with utilitarianism, I strongly support democracy, liberty, constitutional government, the rule of law, public health, universal education and a market economy.
Far more often than not, in all of human history, those institutions have led to the realization of utilitarian goals. Making them all work together can be difficult, but it is the responsibility of every citizen.
Reminds me of the old joke:
In a democracy, what is not prohibited is permitted.
In a dictatorship, what is not prohibited is compulsory.
