Any way to get an alert when someone quotes your posts?

It’d be easier to have conversations that way.

Not on SDMB but you can create a simple google saved search that emails you every time someone quote posts you.

That would be a cool work around. I haven’t ever done this, so would you care to lay out the process in slightly greater detail? Thanks!

Go to Google Alerts, enter “site:straightdope.com “originally posted by bldysabba”” in the search criteria, and adjust the rest of the settings to your preferences.

That is awesome. Thank you both. Mods, this should go in the sticky for searching the site using google!

That is cool!

Ditto.

Yes this violates the “don’t change the quoted poster” rule, but I didn’t want to make two posts.

I’ve been meaning to ask about this, but never got around to it. I love when my question gets answered before I even ask it! Thank you jack davinci and Munch!

Testing again.

Heh. In my excitement, I didn’t think to test it. Also, I set it to a “Once a day” update, so testing involves two steps  I’ll do it in one instead - Does it work?

Not so far… let’s try this. Hmm… do I need the quotes around things?

test

There may be some latency involved from Google’s end of things. Their version of this page is still two days old, with only 5 posts in it.

Just around the “originally posted by XXXXXX” bit.

Still nothing. Maybe there’s a large lag time.

There’s some lag but it works for me. Obviously it’s going to take longer if you select “once a day” but there is also a “all results” vs “top results” option for which you should pick the former.

I did finally get an alert for this thread. Also, I think if you include a string in quotes, capitalisation may be important. So “originally posted by astroboy14” may not work, while “Originally posted by Astroboy14” may.

Testing it again…

It seems it hasn’t been working for me the way it used to. Testing again now with stricter capitalization…
