Any worthwhile Rom-Coms?

Well sure it’s a romcom. It’s all about the two leads having all sorts of difficulties getting together, and finally doing so. Porno is merely the topic. It got me to wondering if softcore porn movies could be romcoms … some are comedies and feature protagonists who get together, sometimes with difficulties. I would say not. The central point of romcoms, the cheese, if you will, is the relationship between the two leads and all the comedy generated by the issues they have getting together. The point of softcore is all the coupling that occurs as the protagonists get together. If you could create a viable romcom story that involved lots of explicit sex it would be a neat trick, but basically impossible as the story literally grinds to a halt every time there is lengthy sex scene.

I’d say the closest there is to a success is the harcore flick “Pirates” which would be a lighthearted romcom adventure movie, albeit not a very good one, without all the sex scenes. As it is, it’s a superior sort of porno.

Roughy toughy bloke here but I enjoyed Sleepless and You’ve got Mail.

You daft prick!

I like that movie, too.

I’ll second “When Harry Met Sally” and “Music and Lyrics” and add “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” It may not be a popular choice, but I thought the plot was pretty original within the Rom-Com genre.

And to respond directly to the OP, “Romancing the Stone” just might qualify! If that does not meet your qualification for recent, how about “40 Day and 40 Nights”? Had some hilarious scenes.

A few from the last 10 years that haven’t been posted and which I enjoyed:

“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”
“Garden State”

Not exactly stock rom-com, but I think they both fit.

I like romantic comedies as a category (and am prepared to kill and eat anyone who asks me for my man card), but I am especially fond of Down With Love, When Harry Met Sally, and Hitch.

Down With Love is a scream.
