For Valentine’s Day my office is going to be showing a “romantic movie” at lunch time (spread over two days), and I’ve been asked to give suggestions for good romantic movies.
Frankly, I’m having a hard time coming up with any I wouldn’t mind watching, and so I thought I’d ask the good people on the SDMB for their suggestions. Basically, I’m hoping to come up with a good movie, so I won’t get stuck watching some mindless drivel. Some of the other women in my office want to see How To Lose A Guy In Ten Daysretch, or Maid In Manhattan (doubleplus ungood).
Any good ideas? The only decent rom-com I can think of right now is Ever After with Drew Barrymore in an updated Cinderella story. It’s not a great movie, but I seem to remember enjoying it. I don’t usually go to romantic comedies in the theatre, but might end up catching part of them later on TV, so I’m having difficulty coming up with a list of possibilities.
So what’s my criteria? Basically I’m not a huge fan of the Boy Meets Girl -> They Date -> They Break It Off Due To Some Bizarre Misunderstanding and/or One/Both of Them Has Been A Pathological Liar -> Then They Reconcile At The Last Minute -> Kisses! -> Then End.
Also, since they’re showing the movie over two lunch hours, the total running time should be approximately two hours (or less). And I think it doesn’t necessarily have to be a romantic comedy - I could probably convince them to go for a more dramatic movie as long as it has high romantic factor.
Another vote for When Harry Met Sally - it’s a classic.
If you want something with modern appeal, Wimbledon and Love Actually might appeal to the more “mainstream” contingent while not making you want to retch.
Say Anything. The ultimate romantic comedy that guys like as much as girls. “I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen.” John Cusack is The Man, and Cameron Crowe rules.
Keeping the Faith. Starts out like a joke: a priest and a rabbi are best friends… until they both fall in love with the same girl. Quite funny.
I’m not quite as unromantic as you can get, but nearly. I’d vote for reading aloud from the book Bridget Jones. Or, failing that, you could do worse than:
Love Actually
Wimbledon
Four Weddings
Notting Hill
I love romantic comedies and these are the two I intended to suggest. They’re not as cloying as the others and have talented actors in them (I love Edward Norton and Love Actually has a stellar ensemble cast) instead of supposedly cute women with no talent otherwise.
I always liked Roxanne with Steve Martin as a modern day Cyrano DeBergerac. It’s a rather sweet, quirky little comedy with some nice touches. You do have to buy Darryl Hannah as an intelligent astronomer, but aside from that …
