I am considering taking my 14 year old son to see them when they come to Toronto. Although I have long been aware of them and have seen them in a number of commercials I really have no idea what to expect. Their website while very nicely put together isn’t much help other than to say you should wear older clothes and ponchos will be provided if you have seats near the front. (I hope they don’t smash watermellons) Can any Dopers fill me in? Will a 14 year old be bored? Will I?
I took my daughters (10 and 14 at the time) to Blue Man Group, where we sat in the poncho-needing section. The old one, particularly, expressed her feeling that she would be bored by such a silly show, lacking in the sophisticaion she required, but she had a good time anyway. The 10-year old loved it, as did I.
They’re fantastic. Take him. Is the the “Tubes” show (which I have seen three times) or the more concert-like traveling one (which I have not)?
I saw them in Boston last year. I have sensory issues and thought I might be bothered by the lights and drowning in toilet paper and that sort of thing, but I had a lot of fun and would definitely go again.
I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to be bored.
Their traveling show is like an electronic, percussion driven, electric guitar rock concert with a lot of special effects. Strobe lights, lasers, video screens.
Sample some of their music from their album The Complex
to see if this is something he might like.
Me! Me! And I’d probably bribe you to give me your tickets to go again. It is amazing, thumping, loud music, exciting, cool stuff they do, and I can’t wait to hit them again. Best concert I ever went to or ever will, I’m sure, since I’ll never have that feeling of “first time” again. I think the kids will like it.
No watermelons, they use water on their drums and stuff. Very loud but so cool.
I don’t think they’ll be bored at all. It’s a weird but upbeat and energetic show. It’s performance art, so if they don’t like they will probably really not like it, but it’s fun.
From the pics it appears to be the “Tubes” show. The theatre in Toronto has been specifically redesigned for them for a long term run.
Thanks to all for the input. I have a feeling we will enjoy it and at $59 cdn for the tickets it’s not a huge investement.
Qadgop and some other Dopers have.
I’ve got the DVD of their “Complex Rock Tour” show. It’s fantastic. I’d love to see their show.
If you want to see what they’re like, you could rent the DVD or buy it. But then it might spoil some of the fun at the live show.
I’d definitely recommend taking him. It’s hard to describe their show, but it’s kinda like a combination of a techo music concert and really good pantomime comedy. I was never bored for an instant. Also, it’s a “family friendly” show, that doesn’t involve sex or foul language (or non-foul language, for that matter ). I saw their show in Las Vegas last year, paying $100 per seat for myself and my date, and it was worth every penny.
I saw them in Chicago and a narrator for one sequence dropped an F-bomb at one point during the show. But that was it.
They have this sequence where the Blue Men smear shaving cream on a pane of glass while a movie camera shones images on it. So you could only see the images on the shaving cream, as the glass didn’t reflect. Or something. Anyway, the movie was this trippy sequence of images of fractals, while the narrator explained the science and math of fractals. At one point she said something like, “…which, when you really think about it, is a total mind-fuck.”
Blue Man Group is fun for the whole family!
