Anybody Else Using "Google Alerts"?

One of the nifty features of Google is their “Alert” service. Basically, you program it with terms your interested in, and whenever the Googlebots come across them as they’re doing a webcrawl, they send you an email with a link to the page which has the terms that match your search query. I’ve found it to be really handy as it’s pointed me to web pages related to Preston Tucker that I never would have found out about, and it’s how I learned that I’m on trial for murder.

Yes I use it for one of my web pages. It’s cool because whenever a new page links to mine, I get an alert.

I use it. My best friend in high school is now a Dr. in another state. I heard through the grapevine that he was arrested for molesting a youth female(s). I was able to be notified when his case came up in court, as the local newspaper and tv station news for his community is published on the web.

Yes. I use it for some of my favorite authors, some political stuff I’m interested in, and my daughter’s school. (They had a bit of a brouhaha recently regarding recruiting for a sports team, and they got slapped down quite hard.)

I use it to track news and blogs related to companies I’m interested in. It gets redundant, though, if a story is picked up and re-run on many sites.

I used to pay for a similiar service that was more comprehensive, but overall it wasn’t as good.

I’ve used it to track threads/questions asked on our Board for which no answer has been found. The Pizza Bomber case for one. Useful.

I have a bunch set up: my own site, so I can see who links to me or refers to me on it; another nick I use (same reason); and various media personalities and performing artists (it makes it easy to see when their next show/appearance is).

I get all my up-to-the-minute Alice information that way. Well, other than by boards dedicated to him.

I have a few set up for various news items. They aren’t as useful as I hoped they’d be but I don’t want to go to the trouble of stopping them. My GMail account isn’t filling up that quickly.

I have one for my pen name, to see if anything I write has been reviewed or promoted (or stolen), and another set up for the company name of my day job employer.

Very handy.

I use it to track the name of my riding for any local political news (this is the only useful part of being named for a 17th-century nun rather than, say, the neighbourhoods it covers).

I use it to watch for old wrenches I may be interested in either on Ebay, Craigslist, or just mentioned in articles or otherwise on the web.

Huh, nifty. I just started a few; let’s see how this works out.

My husband uses it to see if any articles mentions his company name. As part-owner of a startup software company, pretty much ANY good pub they get goes up on their website as soon as they find out about it.

Remember to use quote marks for multi-word searches, or you’ll get the same erroneous results you would in a search engine.

I track a rare illness and several scientific leaders in this area. I used to use it more frequently–more names and medical terms–when I produced a newsletter for patients of same.

I’m also watching out for news of a very prominent medical doctor who got busted for Medicare fraud to be brought to justice. It won’t make the front page, so this helps.

I will add my name and website address to my list now that Savannah gave me the idea.

A friend plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I can keep up with any news about him. I think the alerts are very cool.

I use it to keep track of news in Animation.
