Don’t think much about the book. It strikes me as like too many “inside the trial” books where the author wanted to tell “his story” more than “THE story”.
I was in high school and a MD (military dependent) so he didn’t make that much of an impression at the time other than “a doctor going full airborne and winning the beanie?” In other words he was a curiosity even before the killings. People around base back then seemed divided. The people at WOMAC figured “maybe he did it, maybe he didn’t”. Other officers seemed more like “had he done it, he would have done it better”. Leaving aside what constitutes “better”, it was maybe like 70/30 he ended up framed. Bragg was full open back then and odd folks often wandered into “married officers housing” so kooks from town was a known and expected issue.
Limbaugh? Actually, a pussycat. Didn’t lord it over his workmates on the job, just did his work quietly and professionally. Socially, something of a loner. You couldn’t step all over him, he stood his ground, and if you did a good job, he’d say so. Politely respected people of lower status, but if he wanted something done, he’d rather do it himself and take charge of getting it done.
Best friend in high School, fell out of touch with him almost immediately after graduation.
18 years later he made the news for his arrest. He molested 6 girls ages 8-12, one of whom was his 11 year old daughter.
What a good guy. Shame we fell out of touch.
I went to high school with and later had to deal with professionally someone who was the plaintiff in a landmark Supreme Court case. The Court sided with the state. I will not go into further details because it pinpoints my location too closely.
My family doctor suddenly closed his practice and left town. Shortly afterward, he was arrested for murder. Apparently, twenty years earlier, he had killed his best friend and married the widow. The trial was held in another state, on the other side of the country, but our local newspaper covered it in detail.
A co-worker of mine (who, it turns out, had a history of drug-related offences) suddenly felt an overwhelming need for the contents of our cash register. Since I was working that night, I went to the hospital, and we both made the newspaper a couple of days later.
Interesting! Thanks so much for responding!
I worked with Jonathan Bervig, the guy in this story. (Sorry about the awful website, that was the most detailed version I could find.
It was a Big Big Deal at when it happened, because many people from our office had spent time with him socially, with him even once staying home with everyone’s kids while the other adults went for a beer and takeout run. I wasn’t part of that group, thankfully. Months later, he wrote to several of the women at work and assured them their kids were fine and that he was sorry if they had worried.
I had hung out with him a couple times, and had always thought of him as a very nice guy. I still get the willies when I remember that the night he went out there, straight after work, he had been talking about this new girl a lot, and was very excited about his “date”. My boyfriend at the time also worked with us had always insisted that he was Not Right. He didn’t like him one bit, never wanted me to hang out with him, et cetera. He was pretty insufferable with the “I told you so” for a while after that.
The other issue was that he had a lot of conversations online with the mother while at work. We were working for a high-security account at the time, and those of us in management were panicking, thinking we were going to have to call the client and explain why the FBI was seizing one of their computers!
This guy
Gave me his dog a few months before he was arrested. Still have the dog (he’s getting pretty old).
A few things they left out: His ex-wife bailed him out a jail shortly before he killed her and her kids. He was in Jail for trying to kill his roommate.
His half sister was actually his cousin-sister, his family tree didn’t branch much. IIRC he only had one grandfather (maybe it was one great-grandfather…don’t remember).
His father was found in a recliner, wrapped in plastic, with his junk exposed. Terry used to go over to the trailer the body was in and mow the lawn, and change the air fresheners so nobody would discover it.
My husband’s best friend was murdered the summer after they graduated from high school. I believe the man who did it was found some form of not guilty but is or was being kept in a mental institution. His best friend was apparently a very sweet guy, on his way to the Rochester Institute of Technology. My husband sometimes speaks of his with great sadness.
I went to school with one of the guys that dragged James Byrd Jr.
Let’s see, the pastor at our family’s church was embezzeling millions of parish funds to pay for gambling trips, fancy cars, vacations, antiques, you name it. He made a death bed confession right about the time he was about to get caught. His secretary was in on it too – it’s suspected they were having an affair, but it couldn’t be proven.
I also have a cousin who was charged with manslaughter for stabbing someone in a knife fight over some stolen weed. The charges were dropped though when it was determined to be self-defense. (Yes, the kid is a total loser)
I’m glad this zombie has arisen (again) since I now have additional items to post.
An acqaintance of mine made the local news for not being able to tell the difference online between a 14-year-old girl and a Sheriffs Deputy. When he travelled to the next county over to get some hot action, he instead got arrested. I try to think kindly of the guy, but he really makes it difficult since he did things like send lurid photos of himself and described quite explicitly what he wanted to do with and to a 14-year-old girl. He’s doing time and I’m fine with that.
Another acquaintance of mine is currently going through the trial process of having date-raped 3 different girls at his college in one week. He’s out on bail. Ran into him at the local game store when it was having a going out of business party and it was the creepy elephant in the room.
This creep was my former boss’s husband:

Another creep is a current co-worker’s ex:
Look up Stacey Stikes murder,Bastrop Texas.
I worked in the same store.
Very badly handled investigation,IMHO
Guy they have for the murder was/is not a nice person.
Neither is her boyfriend… Follow his career.
This guy is sort of family by marriage, and we’d been at events with him over several years before the story broke:
I don’t know if this counts since I only met her once (and only talked to her for maybe, five minutes, if that), but a cousin of mine was murdered by her boyfriend last year. He slashed her throat open, then the police were forced to shoot him after he lunged at them with a knife. The tazer apparently didn’t work because of all the layers of clothing he was wearing.
No need to offer sympathies – like I said, I didn’t know her. Nor was she exactly the nicest person in the world, either. I mean, I’m sorry about what happened to her, but she wasn’t exactly my favorite member of the family.
I grew up with and was close friends with this guy.
I had lost touch with him and we hadn’t spoken in at least 10 years, but I recently found out he is serving 15 years in prison for child molestation and weapons charges. There was absolutely zero indication the entire time that I knew him that he would ever do anything like this. He was a police officer when he was initially arrested for child pornography and was married with three children. I still wonder how the guy I used to know could have done anything like this.
Played soccer with one guy who was executed in Oklahoma for him killing his wife.
Played soccer with another guy who actually appeared in one NASL game, and played on a lot of semi-pro teams. He’s in jail now for child molestation. 25 years.
This one’s more of a FOAF situation, but should still count.
Recently I reconnected with a circle of friends who I used to hang out with in the early days of the Internet. Among them was a rather unique, flamboyantly homosexual man named Peter, and his boyfriend Mark. Never met either of them in person, but I heard lots of stories, and often would hang out with them on IRC chat (that’s how long ago it was); they seemed really good-natured and didn’t mind us cracking jokes like how it’s okay they’re gay for each other, since “that leaves more pussy for the rest of us,” etc…
Long story short – about two years ago, Peter & Mark were arrested for child exploitation. They purchased a baby Russian boy off the black market, and traveled the world selling him to pedophiles. NOBODY in my circle of friends had any clue that their gay-couple identity was merely a front, and I still have trouble believing it’s true. Even typing this paragraph makes me sick to my stomach.
Anyhow, they’re both doing 30-40 years in federal prison. Pete’s even got his own entry on Wiki’s list of notorious prisoners at the institution he’s currently held at.
I hope to finally meet him when he gets out.
