I would love to hear your opinions. Please add what kind of sleeper you are (side or back) and how much you weigh.
I assume you mean one of these.
If not then I have two waterbed mattresses that happen to be purple.
Anybody Have a Purple Mattress?
I do not have a Purple Mattress
I do not hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhatress
I’d rather see than be one.
– apologies to Frank Gellett Burgess
I do. I just got it in January. What would you like to know?
I’m female, about 115 lbs. I have the regular queen. I’m normally a side sleeper, but with this I can even fall asleep on my back while reading.
I’m interested, too. My I.T. Guy really needs to replace his mattress, and was looking into a Purple largely for the 90- or 100-day free trial. We both want relatively firm surfaces, and he sleeps hot so is wary of memory foam.
So: does this mattress trap body heat? Is it squishy?
It’s not squishy. I don’t sleep hot, I guess, so I can’t answer the heat question…
All I can really say is that I am happy with it - it replaced a regular spring and coil mattress, which was old and uncomfortable. I am sleeping 100% better.
They do just drop it off at your door, all rolled up. I managed to get it in the house myself, barley. It is absolutely a two person set up job, especially if you have to climb staris. It is very heavy! There are instructions on how to do it on their website.
But what if you don’t like it? I’d imagine it’d be pretty hard to roll it back up and stuff it back into the box or bag it came in.
Thanks, meow.
I am especially interested in people my size (6’1", 200 lbs) and side sleepers. I would also like to know how it holds up after a year.
This is one of a number of companies (Caspar, Tuft & Needle, Leesa, etc.) that sell foam (no springs) mattresses online and deliver them by UPS. So you never actually lie on it until it comes to your home. I think all have a 90-100 day return policy. From what I’ve read, they will send someone to your home to pick it up. Supposedly they’ll try to donate it to a charity, otherwise it will be disposed. (BTW, I think getting it in the box requires equipment to pull air out of the foam, or compress it, so it’s not something you’re going to do yourself.)
As for Purple mattresses, they do sell them in some retail stores, so you can go and try it the old-fashioned way.
I (6’2½", 285) have a memory foam mattress but not a Purple. Mine’s still in good shape and I doubt theirs would be much different.
The frame it’s on is a different story, that’s where Purple should be significantly different. The thin metal bits on this one have bent under my weight even though it’s supposed to hold 2000 pounds; Purple frames are supposed to be sturdier.
I bought a Casper mattress online a couple of years ago, but I think I’ve seen them in Target stores now as well.
To the OP: As I said, it’s a Casper, not a Purple mattress, but I think they’re essentially the same thing. I’m 6’, 220 pounds, usually a side sleeper. The mattress is comfortable, and I don’t find myself getting overly hot during the night. My only concern is that sometimes when I wake up the shoulder I’ve been laying on will be slightly sore.
On one hand, that means I didn’t move much all night, so I was obviously comfortable; on the other hand, it means my shoulder created too much of a pressure point with the mattress, which is something they claim they’re specifically designed to avoid.
The thing is that mattresses are a really personal thing. What you like, another person may hate. So I’m not sure what value it is to you that others liked a particular mattress.
That is certainly true. What I was hoping for is people’s experience with their durability.
Also, the Purple Mattress does seem to differ substantially from the other types of mattresses. They do not use any memory foam (a key ingredient in all the others). They use a grid of what they call "hyperelastic polymer. This grid collapses under your weight unlike foam that compresses. It does feel different (though not necessarily better).
FYI, for independent and unbiased reviews of all beds and bed related accessories, Sleep Like The Dead is my go to source for information.
I have one new BedInABox bed, and all other beds are traditional spring-type with 4" memory foam toppers. They are ALL extremely comfortable.
Thank you for the site recommendation. That was very helpful.
I haven’t looked at a Casper - but the Purple is a very unusual design. Basically the layer you’re lying on is a layer of mesh. Imagine a square mesh, about 6 inches thick, and you are lying on the edge of the mesh.
But because it’s pliable, that mesh doesn’t dig into you (and there’s a layer of fabric on it as well).
We don’t own one, but we did try one in a store and really liked it.
When I first saw this thread the other day I really thought you were talking about the mattress color; I saw one of their commercials last night. Now I know it’s a brand.
I thought who cares about the color of a mattress? You’re only going to cover it with a sheet anyhow! Then I opened the thread.
It looks like it’s a decent mattress that could please a lot of people, and I wasn’t aware of the infomercials, but still seems like dumb name. If I google up a list of mattress companies I think names like “Beauty Rest” or “Posturepedic” will get clicked on before something called “Purple”
I’ve had one for a little over a year. I got “the all new” and not “the original”. Can’t remember if mine is the “firm” option or the medium option (definitely did not buy the “soft” - pretty sure i bought “firm”). I’m about 170-180 pounds and mostly sleep on my side and i find it very comfortable and have no issues with back or shoulder or anything. You can feel the grid on top with your hand, but you don’t notice it at all when lie-ing on it.
FWIW i also bought the base that Purple sells (since i got rid of my 10 year old box spring) and it went together easy enough and i have no complaint though i still have my old bed frame basically just sitting around the base just for looks - because just a mattress on a base like that with no headboard/footboard gave off a weird hotel room vibe that i hated.
Last note: if you buy “the all new” model, it doesn’t come rolled up (at least mine didn’t), it came in a normal rectangle mattress sized box.
