Anybody here remember "Starflight"?

Yeah, I remember that game. Loved it.

Star Control 2 is my favourite game ever. They should give it, at least, an Oscar for the best script. The plot is that good.-
I downloaded both starflights, they seem interesting. The graphics are a turn off. I just visited Home of the Underdogs and the game in the spotlight is no other than Maniac Mansion I, a fanmade full vga graphics version. Pretty cool.
Aren’t there updated versions of Starflight?
In any case, I play a bit of both starflight todays, I am lost. I need some help, anybody?

I have the hint book for Starflight 2 around here somewhere. What sort of help are you looking for?

hehheh, no doubt. Still, SC2 is well worth it even today if you haven’t already played it.

Yes, I agree completely. I think it is the same deal with movie sequels, as opposed to original ideas. Too much risk on the bottom line.

But in defense of sports games, you need updated rosters. I am salivating for the new Madden, because I’m a Giants fan. Current game? Kerry Collins. New game? Kurt Warner and Eli Manning. drool

Go Big Blue!
Btw, I won’t be able to start Starflight til probably next week. This thread may get resurrected at that point…

While I loved Starflight and spent a large amount of time locked up in my room exploring its universe, Starflight 2 just wasnt all that good to me. I grew bored constantly trading. Perhaps I’ll pick it up again and play it more that I am older and less patient. After being in sales I’ll probably be better able to negotiate prices now.

I’m looking for an online manual which covers The Ur-Quan Masters. No luck so far. The damn probe keeps killing me when I leave the Sol system.

Like probably many others here, I cut my hardcore PC gaming teeth on Starflight. I think it pretty much ate up an entire summer vacation. Hogging the PC for hours on end mining really annoyed the hell out of my siblings. I guess some people don’t appreciate the hard work it takes to save the universe.

Remember that odd floppy-disk switching system in the game? I believe you had a boot-disk, and a play disk, IIRC. I think I screwed up a savegame or two botching the switch. I guess it was an omen of the multi-disc days to come…

Later, in college, Star Control 2 was like crack for me. I remember having that starmap stuck to a big piece of cardboard so I could write notes on it. (Originally, it was on the wall, but my roommate wisely decided a big starmap on the wall wouldn’t be conducive to… ahh, productive study time with ladyfriends we bring over.)

I just played through The UrQuan Masters, and wasted too much time gathering resources before engaging in the main storyline. Near the end of my game, it was the year when everything starts to go down…

(minor spoilers, maybe)

Pkunk were on the move, and I couldn’t stop them this time.
Kohr-Ah were winning, and I hadn’t sent the Utwig and Supox to thin them out.
Melnorme were threatening to bail, depriving me of inflight refueling and making me waste a slot on another fuel tank.

And, you know what? I was beginning to panic, and get REALLY pissed when something didn’t work out like I planned.

It made me remember how much I truly loved the game.

I have a complete walkthrough I wrote. If anybody wants it, email me at jdan37*hotmail.com. (Change the * to @, obviously.)

But I’m guessing you don’t want a walkthough; you want hints. Here’s one:

You can escape from any combat you can’t win. Take the mothership into battle. (Even if you have no weapons.) Press <Esc> immediately. That’s the emergency warp button. (Also works with lesser ships, but stays in combat.)

Just to prove you’re not alone.

Unprovoked by me one of my editors just mentioned Starflight in today’s column

So now I am playing Starflight again. For some odd reason I have to press the spacebar or the enter key twice for each command. Beyond that, the game is just as enjoyable, even knowing the storyline.
