If by ‘be friends’ you mean ‘you not whining like a little bitch when you get your ass handed to you’, then I guess no, we can’t be friends.
I kid, I kid! Sorry. That was my inner Yngwie.

I kid, I kid! Sorry. That was my inner Yngwie.
I saw that coming.
Yngwie… Meh.
I’ll take Paul Gilbert.
Oh, please don’t misunderstand. I don’t like Yngwie, but he is known for being a cocky ass, is he not? I likes me some SRV.
SRV?!
We couldn’t possibly go through a duel, we’re practically brothers!
I just recorded Lenny over a backing track and am looking for the next great SRV song to cover. Will it be Testify, Tin Pan Alley, Little Wing, Pride and Joy or Rude Mood?
Yeah, I’m an SRV mark.
Nice! Lenny is beautiful. For your next, I am partial to Pride and Joy myself.
I reccomend lessons 100% I am about to graduate from a music education program with a specialty in guitar. THe only way we learn music is from others, and having an experienced person lead a student only furthers the student’s ability to succeed. Make sure you find a competent teacher though (no three chorders), it will help build a greater sense of musicality in the student.
Many programs can give you a 4 - 8 week trial period. They are usually a good bet
I agree with this, but don’t rely on it completely to teach you to play guitar. The important thing in the beginning is to maintain interest, and that is why tablature is a very successful ‘cheat’ that keeps guitar players playing.
From my own experience I’d say read tab, develop your ear, and get some formal training to undo any mistakes or other bad quirks you may be picking up. And if you take no other advice from me, take this: Learn to sing while you play (if you’re going to be singing). I find it almost impossible to sing and play at the same time because I focused on playing only.
Seagull Guitars are great hand-made acoustics. They are durable and very well priced. Check them out here.
I’ve never heard about that Euthanasiast, can ya tell me more about that? Is it PC Compatible, what would I need to get it to work? What all does it do? Etc
Line 6 makes it, and the only way you can use it is with your computer. Searching for that elusive SRV or EVH tone, this will take your guitar and make it sound like them tone-wise. It’s like a Pod, but in some ways I think it is better. There’s is an on-line service that you sign up for. It’s like 7 bucks a month, but it is really worth more than that. You can download backing tracks that are in some case (like Hendrix) the actual masters with Jimi’s playing removed! In other cases the original band members recreate the backing tracks minus the guitar (Double Trouble sans SRV). There’s tablature, tones, tracks, lessons…
All of this is added to and updated regularly
For a hundred bucks, it can’t be beat. It uses DSP modeling software to mimic classical amps and cabinets. I have some tracks I laid down with it and you’d swear you were listening to the original artists (unless you’re being very, very anal). I’m at work right now or I’d find a way to post my tracks through the Guitar Port.
The damned thing is even upgradeable! You can give it everything the PodXT has, and all the way up to the Vetta II! I can’t recommend it enough.
OKay, I just went here, and put down a deposit of S75 on this guitar. I’m hoping someone knows this model beofre I pay it off, it’s transferable. I’ve also singed him up for private lessons @ $80 for 4 lessons, though I haven’t paid for them yet. Am I doing ok so far?
Well, I own a Behringer Acoustic amp that I like a lot, but the price on all this worries me. It’s a strat copy with an amp. I’d have to play it to know for sure.
Thanks Euthanasianist!
No problem, let me know how it goes. I think that was probably the best hundred bucks I ever spent.
Well I saw the manufascturers list of $249, but the guy said it was basically a copy of a Fender and showed me one that indeed looked just like it. What should I do? I’m willing to upgrade, but the guy didn’t try to upsell me so I thought it was ok.
Personally, I wouldn’t. Since you have a few knowledgeable guitar players at your disposal, I think you should just tell us what you are looking to spend and we can make recommendations based on that. Guitars are like anything else, the spectrum runs from awful to heavenly. It’s really a matter of what you want to spend. I’m certain we can point you in a direction where you get the best bang for your buck. I just don’t think this is it.
Hell, they’re already guilty of false advertisement.
I can spend $300 easily, $500 if I want to dip into savings, or scrimp on households this week. BTW, this was at a store not the internet, I gooled it and came up with the site. He also offered me headphones for $20. I didn’t notice the computer stuff there but they had 100s of guitars so they may have it as well. The store was called Music Unlimted if that helps, and they private studios upstairs.
Basically I told him what I wanted he showed me that, he was playing a guitar himself when I walked in.
I know that amp, and have to say it is a very nice amp for the money. The guitar on the other hand is kinda crap. I am personally partial to yamaha’s strat knockoff with the double coil pickups on the treble (can’t remember the model number, anyone help me with that) as a starter guitar. Good clean sound, solidly made and last time I checked fairly cheep. Much nicer guitar than the fender squier and at about the same price.
I would recommend that you don’t buy a guitar without having someone who plays try it out. The neck could be warped, the action could be too high, and on and on…
Surely you know someone who plays guitar who could go to a guitar store with you and try a few out for you?
A bad guitar can make playing nearly impossible, especially for a beginner. If I were a bit farther north I’d volunteer; I have a knack for picking good guitars even though my playing sucks.
Okay, it’s possible that he can get a decent Korean made Ibanez SA series and a guitar port for 500.00, but you mentioned scrimping and saving and I don’t see any need to go through all that.
I think what you should do is wait on the amp a couple of weeks or so. take 400.00 and get this:

This is the same site that you linked to.
I actually checked this out about a week ago in a local store and was impressed by the build quality for the price. It is extremely light, but with a mahogany body it still has a warm sound. It has a single coil in the bridge and neck positions and a humbucker in the bridge making it very versatile. The bridge is also very decent (better than my Wolfie anyway). I don’t think you could go wrong here.
When you’re ready to plop down another hundred bucks, get the Guitar Port. Between the two your son will have an extremely respectable beginner setup and may even be the envy of his friends. He’ll have no excuses for not becoming the next guitar Legend.
Fellas, anything further?
