When I was a youngin I had an interesting toy which consisted of a set of transparent plastic spheres each with some kind of mechanism inside, connected to various “ports” on the edge of the sphere that would allow you to create mechanical connections from one sphere to another.
For example, one of the spheres had a small DC motor, and another one had a differential gear, so you could connect the motor to the differential and then connect a pair of wheels to that on the sides.
And there were other components that held batteries and did other things which I don’t remember. So, anybody have any idea WTF I’m talking about?
There are lots of sets on ebay in case you want to go down memory lane (I might!) I built the four and a half foot tall robot kit, by the way, and brought it into my 6th grade class, cementing my reputation as a huge dork.
I’m fascinated, I got stuck with with easy bake ovens and you guys had this stuff?
Do the parts from each kit work with the other kits? My son still loves his Bionicle stuff, for the fun he has using bits and bobs from different sets to create his own stuff. Could he experiment and combine capselas if I got a few sets for Christmas?
I’m not sure if the kits are interchangeable or not; when I had them all there were were the free-for-all kits that made about 100 things. I bet the specialized kits are interchangeable though, it might just take a little more creativity. They’re pretty modular.
