Anyone available to show me around Stockholm in August?

Hey (or should I say hej) Swedish dopers. I’m visiting a friend who lives in Gotland in August but there aren’t any direct flights from London. So, what I thought I might do would be to fly to Stockholm which I’ve never been to before and stay over for a night or two and take in the town before connecting to Visby.

Would anyone be willing to show me around whilst I’m staying? And more to the point does anyone have some good recommendations on cheap places I can stay whilst there? I’m looking at coming around the middle of August so I can catch the medieval festival in Visby.

I’ve already experienced Swedish hospitality from both Priceguy and Worm the Red, the former of whom was even kind enough to put me up at his place when I visited Malmo, so thought I’d see if Stockholm is equally welcoming.

Either post a reply or PM me, tak så mycket!

Anyone?

Hej,

I have found that living in a place means you have no idea about cheap places to stay so I will refrain from it. However, you might find something useful here, here, here or here. Not to mention here. Anyway, if I have nothing better to do I can always show you around or at least point you to some things of interest.

Thanks for the suggestions - I’ll be sure to check them out.

One suggestion from someone who visited Stockholm in 1992 in late August: As far as the Swedes were concerned, at the end of August Summer was over. On September first fares and schedules switched to off-season for many tourist-oriented attractions, and some became unavailable until the next Summer.

Granted, that was 18 years ago, and things may have changed, but as the end of the month approaches, be sure what you want to see and do is still available.

Enjoy Stockholm! It’s a fantastic city.

Don’t fear, movingfinger is exaggerating a bit, IMO. August is when the town is infested with continental tourists so it’s business as usual.
