Anyone been Skiing in the UP of MI?

For natural snow, the closer to Lake Superior the more the snow. There is more natural snow on the east side (Searchmount) than on the west side (Loch and Lutsen). The most snow by far is on that pointy sticky outie thingy that pokes out into the middle of the lake: Keweenah Peninsula (Bohemia). In a poor snow year such as 2011/2012, the best snowmaking is at Lutsen (courtesy of a creek running through it), and the worst snowmaking is at Loch (bring rock skis / boards). There is no snowmaking at Bohemia or the Porkies.

Nitpick: Keweenaw, not Keweenah. Pronounced “Kee-wen-ah”. Just wanted to point that out since in case someone was trying to Google ski areas or something. It’s that peninsula that sticks up out of the UP.

There should be a word for that - a peninsula of a peninsula.

I can’t spell. Thanks for the correction.

Yeah, I guess growing up in WI, the UP (pronounced yoopie) is common knowledge. Never really gave it a second thought.

Then again, if you don’t know what the UP is- you probably can’t help me out much anyway!

Great stuff so far. I’ve talked to the other guys. Looks like we’re either heading for the Porkies or sucking it up and driving to CO. Still up in the air, but I really appreciate all the advice!

I love skiing in the Lake Superior region. I have passes for Loch and Bohemia, regularly ski at Lutsen, ski about in the bush a lot, and have cross-country passes for Kamview/Kakabeka/Sibly and Minnnesota, and used to ski at Searchmount when I was at that end of the lake.

That being said, suck it up and drive to Colorado if you have the time available, for there really is no comparison. Folks in the Lake Superior region head out west when they want a ski vacation. Folks out west head to the Lake Superior region when they want to attend a family reunion.

Time available is really the wild card here. The trip would really need another day or two if we drive to Colorado. I just don’t know what’s feasible for this group.
Keweenaw, thanks for the link. They are only offering week long rentals, but I’ll give them a call and see if I can work out two nights. The weekly rate works out to $171/night. Really a bargain for a place that sleeps 12. If I could just spend $171/ night for 2 or 3 nights, I’d do it in a heartbeat. But to book it for 7 when we’ll only be there 2 would be tough.

If that does not work out, look into renting Bohemia’s big yurt (as opposed to their not as big yurts), which would hold all of you and which can be rented on a daily basis.
