My first impression, when the idea was raised to reintroduce them, was that I didn’t like them. Now, after seeing the idea in action for a while, I still don’t like them.
They’re a great time and effort saver when involved in a mildly complicated thread or one in which the quoted material is not easy to find (i.e., off-board content) or within close proximity. When they first fixed the broken quote function, people went a bit overboard, possibly due to not knowing the software change was made. It can be annoying when people overuse the quote button, but the added clarity is worth it–especially as posters get used to it. Clearly some people will complain no matter what.
Oh, and I’m spiking the punch … no driving afterwards, okay? Party at Giraffe’s house!
I like nested quotes. I think the problem is they’re new here, and just like kids with a new toy, we’re abusing it horribly. Hopefully the novelty of it will wear off soon and people will start using them appropriately.
He’s wrong, because the nested quotes are there by default. It’s not a new feature that people are overusing because it’s shiny and new, it’s that it now takes an extra editing step in order to quote a post without nested quotes. Quoting is now broken by default, and we’re asking users to take an extra step to fix it.
The default behavior will always dominate, and in this case, the default behavior sucks.
/all nested quotes in this post are used ironically
I don’t know that it was ‘broken’ before, and I don’t think it is ‘broken’ now. I certainly do think it’s better now, and once people get used to it, they’ll just take some precautions of their own.
