Anyone else baffled by the my little pony thread?

Sez you.

Personally I’m getting a little tired of the fans’ need to press the show onto others. Sure, there’s a startling number of “I thought I’d hate it but I love it” testimonies, but the evangelism gets really repetitive after a while.

And me.

Yeah, I got that but thanks for reiterating it.

Bosstone, I’m not trying to be evangelical. I don’t really care if people like it or not. I am perfectly willing to accept that my taste in tv is not mainstream. But, I don’t make threads asking people to explain to me why The Wire or Breaking Bad are so popular and I don’t act like people who do like those shows are weird or odd. Frylock said he feels the show is unwatchable. Well, that’s clearly not true. A large contingent of the population think it is.

No problem… I figured a retort like “Sez you” needed a rebuttal.

Clearly this is a matter of debate.
If it helps, I have never watched The Wire or Breaking Bad either, but it doesn’t baffle me that a show aimed at a demographic of grown people appeals to them. That is a little different than the subject we are discussing. I would be equally confused if there was a thread from all the parents of preschool kids talking about how a report on the stock market was their current favorite and they were obsessed by it.

But, anyway I have no problem if you enjoy your little ponies. I just responded to the OP who asked if they were the only one baffled by the interest… I am in case you needed me to reiterate it.

I’m not sure you read (or at least, understood) my post. Sure, I said it’s unwatchable. I also said a couple of other things written explicitly in order to undermine the apparent force of that statement.

You may want to check your definition of “A large contingent of the population”. I just checked and there were two Sponge Bob episodes in the top ten rankings. Other gems like Judge Judy and America’s Funniest Home Videos, and WWE wrestling were there… but couldn’t find MLP anywhere.

In video game parlance, NPC is non-playable character. For instance, if you were playing Super Mario, you’d play the game as Mario (generally). The princess who inevitably gets kidnapped and needs to be saved is an NPC. She’ll show up, interact with you a bit, give you some clues maybe, but that’s it. You can’t take control of her and play the game as her.

Well, first of all, Frylock wasn’t the person who started the thread. Second, I don’t think he’s saying that the show is unwatchable for everyone (I mean, obviously that’s not the case) - just that it’s unwatchable for him. Which is totally reasonable. Frylock gave the show a shot, thought about it, and decided he didn’t like it. As reactions to MLP:FiM go, that’s waaaay over on the open-minded side of the spectrum.

Frylock - I’m interested in the dichotomy you presented in your post, where you said that the show is “objectively good” but also “unwatchable.” Could you go into what you mean by that? I can sort of picture what it means - a lot of anime tends to feel that way to me (“I can objectively appreciate the artwork but the characters and story just don’t connect with me in any meaningful way”), but I’m curious how MLP:FiM creates that sensation for you.

The only reason that this thread exists is that boytyperanma was puzzled over the highly popular MLP thread here.

A large contigent of our population is posting in that thread.

I’m tempted to try an experiment and post obscure Buffy and MLP references in unrelated threads, to see which is more quickly recognized… but I expect that’ll be the norm for MLP soon enough, as it is now for Buffy around here.

I think I can rephrase what I meant as “superlatively good as a show for children.”

It’s got everything I could put on a wish list for shows for my kids to watch. It’s wholesome, intelligent, well-made, engaging, etc.

There’s just nothing about it which makes me want to keep watching once I’ve watched any particular segment. That’s what I meant by “unwatchable.”

That’s pretty much what I’d figured. Thanks for the clarification.

I would still argue the truth in this. I have no interest in counting the distinct posters in the 8 page thread, but I pull up a few pages at random and see the same names over and over again. I decided it would be easier to look at the “What Pony are You” poll, and I see that in 5 days 31 people have voted. This board says that it has 126,118 members, 7,905 active members (not sure how they are defined). 31 posters is either 0.025% of the members here or 0.392%… still considerably less than 1/2 of 1% of our population. Seems to me like a very small but vocal minority than a large contingent.

Again, I have no problem with anyone liking what they like whether I “get it” or not. I’m just baffled by it.

And if you posted a Buffy thread or a Buffy poll, it would be mostly the same posters you’d see, over and over again. Still popular with a “large contigent” of the Dope, no matter how you finesse the numbers in favor of your argument.

Now, post a LotR thread and you’ll be mobbed. I’ll be surprised if MLP reaches that status. (although a “MLP as written by other authors” will probably be along shortly, knowing this place.)

Well, I’m baffled at the idea that people need to be baffled at something.

Do you remember in school, how your teachers would say, if you have a question, ask it, because odds are at least 3 of your classmates have the same question but are too nervous or whatever to ask it themselves. It’s the same sort of thing here. Views are always way out of proportion to posts because not only are the posters reading the thread but whole chunks of lurkers are reading it. A thread that only has 5 people posting on a regular basis could have 50 people simply reading it every day. And just because 1000 people is a small group compared to the population of the US doesn’t mean that it’s a minute faction unworthy of mention.

I apologize to Frylock, as I thought he was making a statement of fact about the show and not simply his interest in it.

I’m baffled that people are actually debating (and actually coming across a little aggressive) over a cartoon about magical ponies.

If you like it, watch it. If you don’t, nobody is forcing you.
