Okay, surely I can’t be the only one who watched Letterman last night and saw a very awkward moment… David Letterman was doing the old “know your meat/current events/etc.” bit and a few people in he picks this very pale, sickly looking guy who appeared to be utterly terrified of being picked. The guy reluctantly stands up and proceeds to answer a few of Dave’s questions at which point the audience is laughing at the guy for being into comic books and superheroes. So finally when Dave asks him what game he wants to play, he extremely awkwardly just bursts into running and the cameras follow him as he leaves the studio.
Anyone else catch this or have any more info on it? I Googled every combination I can think of and didn’t turn up anything. Was it real (god forbid because it was very painful to watch) or staged? Videos of the incident online? I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone talking about this online…
Just goes to show you how small Lettermans audience is I guess?
I didn’t see it, but can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have edited it out if it was real, unless they thought embarrassing a guy for no reason is funny, which Mr. worldwide pants probably does.
Noel Edmonds used to do a light entertainment show on Saturday nights in the UK during which there were various high jinks. I remember seeing a woman in the audience have her seat lowered under the stands and get covered in grunge and then returned to her place, only for it to turn out it was the “wrong” person.
Definitely a bit. Last week the same guy (ok, I didn’t see tonight’s episode, but I assume it’s the same guy) ran out of the studio and pummeled Dr. Phil.
It’s Letterman…random absurdity is practically his trademark. Sometimes it’s hilarious; sometimes it’s merely absurd.
The audience segments frequently have that kind of thing in it.
Once they had a guy stand up, explain who he is, then was asked “Do you want to play ‘Know your current events?’” and he replied “No.” and sat down again. That person was actually Mike McIntee, one of Letterman’s team, who writes the Wahoo Gazette each week.
I saw it and thought it was obviously a bit, at least by the end when the guy dashed out of the studio, since audience members running out of the studio is a, uh, running gag. But there was a very uncomfortable moment before that though during a closeup of the actor where I was hoping it was a bit because he convincingly looked like he was suffering. It was definitely not the same actor who punched out Dr. Phil.
I don’t usually watch but I saw the bit at the gym (don’t really get it, but whatever). The funny part to me was the close-captioning, because I’ve never actually heard the “know know know know know know know know know know know know know etc.” song.
