Anyone else hate self-applauders?

I go crazy when I see a celebrity being introduced, the audience applauses wildly, and the celebrity applauds back (or with them).

To me this seems like the biggest self-congratulatory act in existence. Isn’t one supposed to humbly accept applause?

Does this irk anyone else?

Yes, yes it does. Most especially at awards shows, when they show a close-up of a nominee still applauding for the person announced right before, and they keep clapping as their own name is announced. The classy thing to do is put your hands in your lap and look down humbly.

I admit it, I occasionally self-applaud, but it’s more of an instinctual reaction (like people in the audience who aren’t even paying attention, but clap along with the people around them) than a “self-congratulatory act”

I think everyone should get clapping lessons in second grade. Maybe we can teach them the appropriate use of a standing ovation as well.

Ahh… clapping. Now, there’s a strange concept. All the etiquette it involves and one of the only socially acceptable loud noises. Imagine if the standard applause had been, say, whistling instead?

…or burping:D

…or doing fart noises with the classic hand-armpit combination…
