My stepbrother gave me a CD with a lot of their music. I think I love this band, particularly their instrumentals.
I listened to the whole thing then went back and put their version of Aerosmith’sDream On on repeat. I am a big fan of Aerosmith to begin with and this version just, well, it frickin ROCKS.
*Hayseed Dixie’s * sound reminds me of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones whom I also adore.
This band is the shit. I just wanted to point that out.
I had heard a radio story about Hayseed Dixie, explaining that they were a bluegrass band playing AC/DC songs. I never bought any of their music, but I know I like their singer better than AC/DC’s.
The concept kinda reminds me of Marvin and Mavis Smiley. The Smileys are a parody bit on A Prairie Home Companion. Singers Robin and Linda Williams become a bluegrass band doing collections of songs from Cole Porter, Fiddler On The Roof, La Traviata, and Sweeney Todd. All the songs somehow sound like the same song, as the Smileys play it, and an announcer (Keillor) pitches their latest album, not available in stores.
They did that song as a joke, having decided it was more realistic than all other breakup songs out there. Their cover songs are much better. You should check out their great harmonizing on “Fat Bottom Girls”!
Their version of Hell’s Bells is better than the “real” version - mostly, I think, because of the lead singer’s accent turning it into “Hy’ells Bay-ulls!”
I have a friend who loves them and keeps telling me I must by one of their CDs (I’m not sure which one or even if they have more than one.) However, I am an indifferent music listener at best and would much prefer to spend my money on books. If I heard them and liked them, I might be more inclined to purchase.
Remind me to never listen to my brother again. I started this thread because I liked the instrumental songs by who I thought was Hayseed Dixie. I decided to look up the band and find more stuff by them. Lo and behold, the songs that I really like are not by them at all but come from an album called Pickin on Classic Rock.
