Anyone else read "The Last Dragon", by Silvana de Mari?

We got a copy of this book The Last Dragon by Silvana de Mari for Christmas.

(I’m not sure why it was given to us, it is too high a reading level for my eight year old son and isn’t the type of story he likes anyway. I am not really a fan of fantasy writing except for Tolkien, and my wife doesn’t even like that. )

Anyway I was wondering what other people who have read it may have thought of it? I think the family who sent us the book really enjoyed it but I didn’t think it was so great. Parts of it were humorous but there were some very depressing themes including genocide and a kind of institutionalized child abuse that for me at least really negated any of the humor. Also at the end I wasn’t quite sure what the writer’s point was.

Any other opinions out there? Did I miss the point with this book?

Nobody?
(Bumped for the am crowd).
