I saw this film last week. It’s an independent flick so it’s not enjoying wide distribution, but I highly reccomend it if it’s playing near you. It’s stunningly beautiful, and is a fun mixture of teen-angst/scifi/80s/surreal/philosophical crap/comedy.
Films don’t easily get on Friedo’s Reccomended List (at least, not as easily as Ebert’s Reccomended List. Ebert is a schmuck.)
It’s hard to take Ebert seriously after he gave both American Pie movies a thumbs up. I believe he gives Darko a thumbs down. Hi-Res made the interesting Donnie Darko website and I’ve wanted to see the movie, but I live in the middle of nowhere and it’s not playing at any practical distance. If you haven’t been to the website you should check it out. I guess it will make a lot more sense having seen the film.
I just had to preen a bit, I went to the premiere of this movie with our SDMB resident director, Anamorphic. We had much discussion after about whether we liked it or not. Well, we both liked it, but were hard pressed to say why or how much.
I have to say, it’s growing on me with time and distance. It was well thought out, and wasn’t all concept, which it could have easily done and gotten away with (ie, Momento). It’s a hard movie, though, and made my little actress brain hurt.
And if Drew Barrymore doesn’t stop calling it in, I’m writing her a VERY strongly worded letter about just signing the blank checks and staying the hell away from the camera. I’ll reserve that judgement until seeing Riding In Cars With Boys, though.
I read the script along time ago online, and thought that by now I’d be a bigwig in the film industry and giving this po’ screenwriter a chance. Oh well. I saw 8 minutes of it and some clips on ifilm.com, and it looks great. Does anyone know when it’s getting to Canada? Anyone? I mean, now that we’ve got the talkin’ picture boxes, I’m sure someone will let us see some movies.
