I’m not saying that they should be, or have to be. But when they are, it seems stupid that having other text on the same line immediately fucks up the integrity of the tag. There’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be able to begin a new sentence straight after the [/quote]
tag, without moving to a new line.
Then that’s just an idiosyncrasy of the way they happened to program it, that they happened to do differently than the way the vBulletin people programmed theirs. vBulletin had its share of quirky idiosyncrasies too.
ETA: What’s more troublesome is, they supposedly have an established script to migrate a vBulletin board into a Discourse board, which TPTB used to get us here, and that script failed to translate the syntax of existing quote blocks (and spoilers too apparently) to the correct form for Discourse, so all the already-existing quotes and spoilers imported from the old board are screwed up. Now, THAT they should have taken care to get translated right as part of the import process.
Seriously, I agree with Senegoid.
I set it to “simple sam” or whatever and honestly, I find the whole thing to be pretty good. For only being transferred for a few hours, it is going well.
Give it 6 months. If you truly can not cope, then OK. But I am finding it to be not that bad just a few hours in…
Hate it. Oh well.
I didn’t like it when it just went live, but, with some of the tweaking that’s been handled by the powers that be, I’m actually quite fine with this software. I’m not entirely sure I like the inifinite scroll, and kind of miss hour:minute timestamps (as opposed to “very approximate elapsed time since post”) and message numbers being in the message box (as opposed to the weird graphic on the right), but, other than that, I’m enjoying the experience, overall.
Hey as a long time lurker here, I’m finding this to be a huge improvement. For some reason when on the vbulletin software I could never stay logged in long enough to post anything. So this is awesome. I can post if I want to. Another thing better about the new software is its so much easier to read on a cell phone.
If you are using a device that supports mouse-over, you can hover over the time-stamp of the post and it will display the exact date and time of the post.

Oh, good to know. It does work on my desktop.
Thanks! Very helpful!
Appreciate your…humour? I’m guessing, of course!
You set what?
Where?
I don’t see ‘overlay’ any where.
Or simple Sam.
Click on your icon in the upper right corner.
Click on your name.
Click on ‘Preferences’.
Click on ‘Interface’.
Open the drop-down menu under ‘Theme’.
Select one.
Click on ‘SAVE CHANGES’.
(1) Click on your avatar in the upper right corner of the screen. You should see a box with a list of your notifications, and your own user name at the top.
(2) Click on your user name there. That opens your profile. This is a multi-page layout, with a menu of items across the near-top, one item is “Preferences”. If your preferences page isn’t already open, click on that.
(3) The side-bar at the left has an item “Interface” near the bottom. Click on that.
(4) The first item in the interface is “Themes” with a drop-down box where you can select your theme. Select the one you want. Try Sam’s Simple for starters.
(5) Click on “Save Changes” at the bottom.
(6) Open or re-load another page to see how it looks.
Somebody suggested: Have another page open in a separate tab. Then you can try various themes without having to close the Interface page each time. Just save the changes each time and go re-load the other page to see how it looks.
(ETA: Arrangement may differ on small-screen or mobile devices. Finding each of the above items is left as an exercise for the reader.)
Good idea.
https://boards.straightdope.com/new
I have a “New” button when I log in.
Finding posts I have replied to, and finding posts that I have started.
What is the deal with patronizing little remarks like “poster x hasn’t been here for awhile” or someone is “new to the community” or whatever it said? These are Discourse remarks, I take it, and I want to know how to fix my settings so I never see them. Anyone?
They’re intended for the rest of us to welcome (back) a poster, but I think that can only be changed at the admin level…if at all.
Thank you for your kind help. It not only greatly improved my ease of use (and I really wanted to stay) but I also valued how non-condescending you were in offering. Kindness and grace in action!
“Anyone else considering leaving?”
I leave here every day. Well, every day I visit. Then I eventually come back. At least, every time so far.
Count me in for “My password autofilled, but didn’t work, and then when I did manage to log in and went to change my password, it was autofilled again, and the board had no problem with it”.
